ADN vs. BSN

Hi, I will be starting an ADN program in October and from reading quite a few threads on this board it, I feel some negativity toward ADNs. Does a riff between ADN and BSN truly exist? I chose the ADN route because, #1 cost, #2 length of course work and #3 the waiting lists for the BSN program are 1.5-2 years in my area. I plan on obtaining BSN someday, but was curious to see what you guys have to say. Any info/comments are appreciated.

There is a bit of a riff in organizations that believe the BSN should be the standard education for the RN, so it's debated on this board, sometimes very heatedly.

However, in the real world of nursing we have bigger fish to fry on a daily basis and it's not an issue.

The one and only time in my 15 years of nursing that I ever heard anything was when a BSN said "Any nurse can put potassium in an IV (back when nurses mixed their own fluids), but it takes a BSN to know why". So I can't definately say with assurance it's not an issue that one encourters on a frequent basis, if at all.

We work side by side and don't even mention or educational levels. We take care of the patients.

So don't worry that you'll be mistreated or misunderstood. You're in good company as ADN's are the majority.

Good luck to you in all that you!!!!

:yeahthat: Where I work, we have dozens of nurses from all educational backgrounds. I work alongside these folks every day, but 99% of the time I couldn't tell you whether they were ASN, BSN, or diploma grads. It's been discussed ad nauseum on here and there are some people with strong feelings, but in the real world I don't think your coworkers would know your background unless you told them.

Certainly we can answer the question without fighting. :lol2:

Yes the debate of ADN vs BSN is always heated, but if you ask me stupid. Not the debate itself, just the way people act when one side thinks a certain way than the other. BSN and ADN are trained to be great RN's. BSN can take you higher up the Nursing profession ladder if thats what you want(i.e Nurse Practitioner,CRNA), but an ADN also has many many many terrific job opportunities.
