Did anybody notice a big change in the ICU when word got out that you were going to anesthesia school?
Ever since people found out that I was accepted, it's been very different. People say crap like "oh, he's too good for us now" and I almost always have code call with double isolation, CVVHD, swans, etc. (okay - I like the code call and swans but they don't think I do!) You get the drift. It's so bad now that I'm moving on to another unit. Bleah.

i always thought that i'd run and tell everyone on my unit when i found out i was accepted, but now that it's happened, i feel the opposite. i'm only sharing with select few people that i trust. i'm sure it'll hit the grapevine and the whole unit will know eventually, but hopefully i'll be counting down my last few days by then.

I am applying to programs and made the mistake of telling a co-worker, now people who I rarely talk to keep asking me, do you get an interview, when will you hear something. I wish i did not say anything about it.

I have kept my secret to myself...just because I knew there would be a big change in how my co-workers treated me....its a small fact that lots of nurses seek out ICU because they have future plans....just as I did....however, make no mistake the work is intense and hard. I started school all over when I entered the ICU...my advise to anyone with future hopes is keep it to yourself.

I made the mistake of telling one person how well I did on the MAT when I took it (smoked it big time). ONE PERSON, next thing I know, the entire unit knows my score and my plan. A couple of others in my unit took the same test and came up short compared to my score and they definitely treat me different. That was mistake 1. Mistake 2 was telling my unit manager, whom up until very recently worked along side me in the trenches, that I had 2 interviews with CRNA schools. Suddenly, I'm a leper. I havent even completed either of my interviews yet but I'm already getting some slack and attitude. I could careless though to be honest. I moved up to that unit for one reason and one reason alone. Experience for school. I already had past experience, I just needed more up to date work for my resume. I have it. The way I look at it, those people are CO WORKERS, meaning I work with them. I don't take them home or have to deal with them outside the job unless I choose to and I dont :) I know how you feel even though I havent gotten the acceptance yet but don't sweat it. Your days are numbered there and most likely they envy you and when they go to bed at night.

I've worked in my unit for 6 years and my coworkers have always known that my plans were for anesthesia school. Now that I've gotten in, my coworkers are all happy for me. I've gotten nothing but a positive response. I know I will miss all my coworkers, and they all claim that they will miss me. Maybe they're just glad to see me go!

No, I'm sure they will be sorry to see you go. You gave them 6 years and that's a great committment. Good luck in anesthesia school.

I think a lot of the attitude that you receive or perceive is based upon what you bring upon yourself. Are you a new grad with the attitude of 1 year and I'm outta here or have you put in the time and gained the respect of other co-workers by showing caring, competent, and above-average work. I had six years under the same unit before I started towards CRNA school. I was friends with co-workers, etc. So, it was no surprise to anyone that I had bigger dreams. Including my manager, who was very supportive and gave me several glowing recs. I never felt any animosity or ill-will. Now, that I am in school and away from my job. I have made it a point to visit and call on occasion just to keep in touch. Like I said before, alot of the feelings can be traced right back to the attitude that you portray when people ask you about your plans for the future. Best of luck to you.

I just found out myself that I will be starting CRNA school. I have told all of my co workers and they have all been very excited and happy for me. I hope this doesn't start to happen! Hang in there. You are doing what you feel the need to do in your life. People do get jealous when you make positive changes in your life.
Ok. I got my acceptance letter today from UAB. My wife brought it to me at work while i was pulling 12 hours. I was at lunch. She is all excited for me and brings it in to work. We both get all excited and hug, kiss.........but thats all...I mean hey, we are at work you know. My co workers on the weekened shift that I see all the time.......they are happy for me. Night shift rolls in and some of the older nurses give me a snotty look and it was one of those "yea you all just come into this unit to get experience for CRNA school and leave" look. I read the thought on several faces tonight. Do i care? no. Dont give a shhh. Why? I dont take them home for one. 2, I dont call them friend and 3.........they are just jealous. Why they dont have the gumption to go for it, i dont know. But........Congrats to anyone that made it :)
