A&P2- what section first?

i'm taking A&P2 this semester too. and i think we are doing nervous system first. what book do you use? we have HOLE'S ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY..unsure of the edition but it has a rock climber on the front. they have a good website. http://www.mhhe.com/shier

With AP II it takes more than memorization. You really do need to have an understanding of how each system works. With my class......we started with the Autonomic Nervous System.

If I were you, I would just glaze over the chapters you think you will be covering. Make notecards/flashcards of the key words & definitions. That's how I usually study & I ended up with an A. :)

Another thing to really look over is the endocrine system. In my class, we had to know each gland & what type of hormones it produced & what effects they had on the body. There are a lot of them, but it's not too bad.

Oh.........also start looking over the sympathetic & parasympathetic reactions on the nervous system. Those were a little confusing for me at first.

Nervous system (CNS, PNS, ANS, Symp., Para.), Endocrine system, we did those in A&P I. Are they covered again in A&P II, or is my course just totally different?

We begin our A&P2 with the endocrine system. We are using Fundamentals of A&P. I think each course is different in the way it is taught and in what order as well.

I'm also taking A&P II this next semester. We finished last time with the autonomic nervous system & we'll start A&P II with the endocrine system. We use Tortora& Grabowski's Princip. of A&P. Aren't you using the same book for A&P II as you did for A&P I? We basically did chapters 1 through 17 in order in A&P I & we'll pick-up with chapter 18 in A&P II.

I'll be so glad when I'm done with A&P!!!

Thanks for all the responses. I appreciate them. I should have mentioned that we are using Hole's book. We skipped all around the first semester. I am getting so discouraged. I was able to partially memorize the stuff in A&P1, but trying to understand it got me into trouble..... not enough time... I barely scraped by with a C. When I spoke with our instructor, she told me to not to try to understand it, just memorize it and that it would come together once I was in the RN program. I am praying that this is so. If it isn't, I might as well go into Sociology. I see the different posts from people that are dissapointed that programs aren't more scientific, and I cringe. It makes me question my ability to achieve sucess in the RN program.

Am I the only one that feels that way? I want to understand the why's, but right now all I can do is keep my head above water.

Any imput is appreciated.

We're using the exact same book and went through the same chapters. I too can't wait until it's over...but then there's still microbiology in the summer (uuuugggghhhh!!!!)

I'm also taking A&P II and use the Hole's Anatomy book. I made it through last semester by using their website. I printed off the study guides for each chapter we studied and it was so helpful. I also used the flashcards from the website. I ended up with an "A' in the class. I,too, learned it from memorization. We got through the first 11 chapters in A&P I so I just assumed we would start off with Ch 12. I've been reading it and trying to be prepared. Our instructor usually tests us on 3 to 5 chapters at a time.

Are you in the nursing program at your school? I've not been accepted yet. I have to take a Nusing Entrance Test (NET test) in February. I don't know how to study for this test. Our school admits 70 students each fall into the program. I've heard about 300 people take the test every February so admission is VERY competetive! Did you have to take the test? Can you give me any tips on how to study? Thx!:)

Good luck to you with your entrance testing. We don't have that here at our Community College. I'm hoping to have my prerequisites done by the end of summer. I have to have my application in for the RN program by March. One of my teachers (Interpersonal Communications) offered to write a letter of recommendation for me and to assist me in completeing my application- we have to submit a whole "thingy" on why we should be accepted into the program. They also want work/volunteer history-well we've only lived here for a little over a year so I don't know many people and I have three special needs kids at home so I don't work....I do have a web site for students at our college with lots of links for Nursing Students...but that's about it.

In our first semester of A&P. we went through chapter 1,2,3,4 then 1,5,6 then 7,8,9,17 the last two chapters we covered in about three hours......ugg.

I love the website for the book, printed out the study outline, but the instructor we had skipped all over the place so they were almost useless. Hopefully the instructor I'll have this semester goes by the book much more-that was why I requested him.

Good luck! I'm in A&P 2 this semester as well and personally, I really like it but I have an excellent professor! :) He makes understanding it so much easier! I actually got a 97% in A&P1 after being out of school for 12 yrs! That's a testiment to how good he is! :chuckle I made sure I got him for A&P 2!

As far as systems, etc.. I think most profs do it different. I'm at a large university and we did the CNS, PNS, etc.. all in A&P 1. I don't have a clue on what we'd start with in A&P2.

If you have a good professor, you will be able to understand it. I'm not saying you will remember every detail about it...so of course there is some memorization when studying. And you will probably forget it just as quickly as you learned it. :) Don't worry!

AP I is ALL memorization. AP II is different. I found it a lot more interesting because it is amazing what the human body does every second of the day. I did better in AP II than I did in AP I. Hopefully you'll have a good instructor. With mine, we hardly even had to open the book. Take good notes, tape record the class if you are allowed & redo your notes so that they are accurate & look them over prior to the night before the test. The information will start to sink in. You'll do fine.

Good luck on your nursing application process. Your community college's process makes me thankful mine was so easy. As far as the work/volunteer thing goes.......be sure to mention that you do have three special needs kids at home------that is a lot of work! Just because you don't get paid for it, doesn't mean you aren't working hard to take care of their needs. Take credit for it because I'm sure it's not easy, ok?
