Need advice...life threatened by pt's family today
I don't know if the grandfather lives with the mom and pt., but if he does I don't understand why they haven't already been turned in to child protective services. Sounds like the girl would be better off.

Nursing school vs. nursing shortage
Chadash had mentioned that their school was 1st come-1st serve. That surprises me too. My school bases their selection on an extensive interview process, as well as # of pre-reqs completed, and grades. We had over 120 apply, 47 accepted, and 33 remain. We are currently in Gerontology, we still have Med-Surg 2 this summer before the year is up. At the rate we're going I expect our class to be 27 before it is all over. Which is funny because they can only accept 33 in the 2nd year program and they have already sent out acceptance letters to people who will be in next years 2nd year program, but are not in our class.

nursing school stress
If you want to go out of state Barton County Community College is a really good (although really hard) school. This year about 120 applied, 50 are accepted, next year about 70 will be accepted because of an outreach program they are doing, but classes will still be small. To improve your chances of acceptance anywhere: get your pre-reqs done (or mostly done) and get a B average or better, also get your CNA.

Nursing school--credit report??
I don't know which school you are applying at, but I think I would be offended if they asked for my credit report. This was not a requirement for Barton County Comm College. However, there is paperwork you have to do for financial aide, but even they didn't need a credit report. The health insurance you might have a problem with though. That was a requirement at Barton and the physical and updated shot records are normal. Dental... don't know why they care about that either. Most colleges do offer health insurance for students at a discount price, so it will be important to find out if they do that.

Did Anyone Go To Nursing School While Raising Kids?
One more thing... if you have to work... a night shift job that you can do your homework at allows for more time with them during the day.

Did Anyone Go To Nursing School While Raising Kids?
I am married, have 2 kids - 7 & 8, work 40 hours, have the nursing program (9 credit hours) and finishing last pre-req next semester (3 credit hour) = 12 hours. This is still my first year, but so far I am managing. The hubby is a big help. Luckily my kids are old enough that when we had the "mommy's going back to school" talk, they were very understanding, especially when I explained how we would have more money and how that would benefit them. Like someone else said earlier I think it has really helped them understand how important getting a good education and going to college is. The best advice I can give is PRIORITZE. Does it really matter if the house is a mess or dinner is sandwiches occasionally? If there is a minor emergency (one of the kid's is sick or sad) will it be a disaster if you homework gets a C instead of an A? Don't try to be perfect at everything or everything will go to pot. It's gonna be hard, but it goes fast. Remember why you are doing it and that you HAVE TO DO IT! Don't make it a choice, I've seen people drop because they think they have that choice. You will miss a part of their life, but how much better will the rest of their life be because of it? Ask for help, that's what you mom is there for. Check out "How to survive and maybe even love nursing school" from your local library. Good luck and be blessed.

Weeding out of nursing students
I know a smart guy who lived in NY, had a good education and a good job, but for some reason decided that nursing school would be fun, easy, and something he could always fall back on if need be. He entered the program, and found out it was a lot harder than he expected. He got tutoring and was squeaking by, but finally decided he really didn't enjoy it and quit. He said he didn't want to one day end up REALLY messing up, and then have to tell the family, "Hey sorry your family member is dead, but nursing is not really my thing". We all now how much guts, hard work, and determination it takes to finish the program, but I think it also takes a lot of guts and honesty with yourself to admit, you're not interested or good at something like that.

Weeding out of nursing students
The nursing program at the college is harder than any other in the area. It also has the highest rate of NCLEX passers (at least per capita). It is proud of that, and I am sure their pre-reqs weed on purpose. The 3 hardest pre-reqs are Chem, AP, and Microbiology. I used to be agitated that we had so many more than other schools, but I am glad now. The reason why is we have a lady who is getting 2 years of education, an appartment, and who knows what else paid for by unemployment and has no place being in the program. She has taken AP twice and failed. She only passed Microbiology because she begged another student to tutor her. He basically took the class for her. She tried to beg me and I simply don't have the time (full-time job, married, 2 kids). I am so glad I didn't help her. I don't know how she passed Chem, must have begged some poor sap there too. She's not going to make it, and although cruel I will be glad. Who wants an incompetent nurse who basically cheated their way through the program?

WHY are nurses so catty??
I think I was getting my definitions wrong. I thought catty was cat-like, in that we women will pull out our claws and rip people a new one when they need it. And I don't think this is always a bad thing. I think it is good to stand up for yourself, give and EXPECT respect, and everyone to WORK when they are at work. As for they two nurses where I work. Yah the one "hiding out" deserved to be ripped, just not in front of people, especially all-male patients. And yes one of us should have broken it up, even though they are our superiors, but it was ending as we were walking out the door at the end of our shift. And women are meaner than men, and that isn't based on any one person or situation.
