Nurse/Patient Ratios

What are nurse/patient ratios like where you work? ICU? Med/surg? Other?

Here in Sask, I usually get 1 patient in the ICU. I hear that the medical and surgical floors can get up to 16-18. Is the entire country similar to this?

Do you mind if I ask what size of city you work in? If you want, you can PM me. Those ratios sound much better than here, and I know an RN and LPN who are both looking for positions in Alberta.

on my current unit, the ratio is always 3:1 in the trauma rooms... on the surgical side it's 4:1 for days/evenings and 6:1 on nights...

my old unit (another surgical), it was 4:1 on days/evenings and 8:1 on nights...

The most I have seen here is 2:1 in the ICU and 8:1 on the floor at night. During the day the floor ration is usually 4-5:1.

6-7:1 on days

8-9:1 on nights
