PA LPN's now permitted to accept verbal orders.

  • Experts

effective 12/19/03:

the state board of nursing has just issued final regulations to allow lpn's to accept both written and oral orders for medication and therapeutic treatments from a practitioner authorized by law and by facility policy to issue orders for medical and therapeutic measures that falls within the scope of functions for lpn's. the lpn must have recieved instruction and training in accepting an oral order in an approved nursing education program or has received instructions and training in accepting an oral order in accordance with the established policies of the facility. the policy and regulations governing a facility need to permit lpn's to accept an oral order. for more direct information

Just got a memo from our DON our LPNs are now able to do this in my LTC. Not sure how I feel? Am I responsible for co signing their orders? I know a few of our LPNs will be reluctant to get orders, but this does take a lot of work off my hands. What's going on with your facilities?

:) hi, I've worked in the ER and Dr's offices and on Med Surg and still do. I think it will be a great help for LPN's to be allowed to take verbal orders. The training they recieve makes them capable and it makes it difficult for an RN to have to come down the hall and around the corner just to accept an order over the phone when her team member LPN is right there. We all have to work together to make life better for our team members;) This seems like a good fix. I hope it is:p

At my facility LPN's still can't so I suggest everyone check their policies on this issue. As we all know change is hard to get used to.
