Hi all, I'm new here, I am a new grad, I have worked as a dialysis tech for ten yrs. I was hired as a dialysis nurse, on the first day of work, my boss called me into his office to tell me that he wanted to change my salary that we had agreed on for a much less salary. I was very upset, I didn't even want to finish my day, but I'm a professional so I just sucked it up and work the day. I am a single parent, I have no money coming in however, working at that place to me is a waste of time. Its a long drive, short hrs, and no insurance, there's no benefit in going to that place, but I feel like I have no choice at this point. Please all of your advice/input is needed. Thank you!

I am in much the same boat. When I have a replacement job lined up, then I can do what I want to do. Look for another job.

sorry to read about the unfair negative experience you encountered with your first employer as a new nursing graduate. hang on! better days can be just ahead in the near future for you.

i offer you kudos to you for remaining professional and working the entire day. shame on your employer for changing your compensation agreement in the negative in that manner! it may even be illegal depending on your state and workplace! at the very least, i am surprised that that employer actually has any staff nurses given that behavior not to mention little or no benefits.

if you are a new graduate rn, i suggest applying to work as a nurse at your nearest hospital or urgent care center. i am quite certain you will be treated much more professionally and offered much higher compensation, and, of course, be offered good benefits. renal rns seem to be in high demand by acute care hospitals and dialysis centers. this translates to more open positions and potentially interesting compensation.

i also suggest looking for nursing positions in your area in local newspapers and online more specifically individual healthcare organizations websites.

your needs and feeling about how you where negatively treated as a new graduate by your first employer are indeed very valid. all rns have been new graduates at one time in our nursing careers. many of us experienced challenges to overcome when our careers began.

i offer my view as a new mid career change nurse that nursing remains a rewarding career with career choices, advancement and compensation opportunities not currently offered in other industries.

I have applied for work in many hospitals, hopefully somrthing will come up soon. In the meantime, I have to stay and work for these people as I do have bills and two children to care for. Where are you from? Hospitals in my mid size city ALWAYS

need nurses. This seems to be true in most areas.

I know a grad nurse with decent personal references would

be hired at almost any hospital. They would be compensated

and given allot of benefits.

Glad to hear you are going to stick it out until something better shows up. You would only hurt yourself by quitting before you have another job lined up. Also every day worked at this place is another day of experience you can tick off on that one year experience clock. Good luck finding something better.

Hi gprocopio, Im in NY (live in long island, work in brooklyn). I have an interview next week in one of the hospital closed to my home, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Good Luck on your interviews!! I hope you find something soon. When you are settled contact 311 or the NYS Dept of Labor. Your employer violated Section 195.1 of NYS Labor Law. As of October 2009, it is NYS law all employers must provide employees written notice of pay rate, overtime pay rate (if you qualify for overtime) and regular pay date schedule. There is no standard form but it should be provided to you. Hopefully you still have your 'offer' letter. Submit a copy of your offer letter indicating what you were offered when you accepted the position and a copy of your pay stub. Your employer will have to make restitution.
