I was a nursing student at BCTC but I had to juggle with work a baby and school and unfortunately did not make it past the first semester. As you can imagine with the class being a 9 credit hour class it dropped my gpa to a 2.6. I got in the nursing program with a 3.7, so now I'm struggling to get my GPA up enough so that they can at least consider me. The problem is that even if I take 5 classes this fall and 5 in the spring and 3 in the summer I'll only get my GPA up to like a 3.3 or 3.4 and I don't know wether that will be enough. I know that to consider you you have to have at least a 3.0. i wanted to know what is the lowest GPA that someone has gotten into the nursing program. Could the put me in the waiting list with a 3.4????

You may want to contact them and ask what the average GPA for people admitted to the program was for the previous admissions period . . .

We don't know where BCTC is. That's ok, it doesn't really matter. I am assuming you are talking about a community college (2 year) RN program, or an LPN program.

So, you had one 9 credit class that semester, and you failed, it sounds like. I'm not sure why they wouldn't let you repeat a course though if they admitted you to the nursing program, regardless of where your GPA is at. They might put you on some sort of probationary status because of your GPA, but why don't you check with your school and/or the dean (if you have to) and see if you can take the course again? I think most nursing schools allow retaking core curriculum, within reason (not unlimited opportunities to do so, but, usually there is a little wiggle room.) It's possible that you could petition if you have good reason to allow you to repeat the course if they have no policy on what to do in this situation.

My high school BFF is an academic advisor at a CC and she sees this kind of stuff all the time. You might want to contact yours as a first step to find out what to do.

You should probably ask your school about that.

My school will let you on the waitlist with a 2.5. You need to keep a 2.5 to stay in the program. Your GPA does not determine your place on our waitlist.

But another school by me places you on the waitlist based on your GPA. So you would be at the bottom with a 3.0 and closer to the top with a 4.0.

Are you talking about BCTC in Lexington KY? If so, I got in with a 3.36 but I think other aspects helped like I did well on the pre-entry test and had taken or was currently enrolled in the required gen ed. classes for the program. It is all based on a points system (not discussed with students) and GPA can't account for all of it. I think if you were prevously enrolled there are some extra steps to go through and you have advance standing, above rolling admission students.

If you were previously in the program you have to apply in june but that would mean that I would have to wait for late registration which mean I would have to take just take any classes that are open. So are you going to start this fall of 2010?? I wish you the best luck. I know that everyone is different but I guess I wasn't smart enough so it was extremely hard for me, but hopefully if I can get all this straighneted out I'll be able to apply for the 2011 fall semester because I honestly want to be a nurse. I knew I wanted to be a nurse since I was a kid which is why I got a headstart, I got skipped a grade and I started to take my first pre-reqs since I was in high school, so it kinda all went to waste but you know what they say, "if at first you don't succed just try and try again". thank you so much for the info:D

The pre-entry test is the National League for Nursing (NLN) Pre-Admission Test. You may have already have taken it since you were already in the program. I haven't read much into the advanced standing so I can't help you there.

Yes I am starting the ADN program next week! I am nervous but I am trying my best to stay calm. I do think you are smart because you got IN to the program to begin with! I have heard the program is VERY hard so don't beat up on yourself, k? What is done is done but you know what you want (to be a nurse). This time around, I am sure you will do fine.

@ky_grl82 ohhh yes I did take the NLN, I did better than I expected but I actually. A friend of mine got a 70 percentile and she said she studied from a website on the public library which turned out not to have helped at all so I kinda had to wing it. I'm sure you will do fine in the nursing program if you did good in the NLN because the way that they set up the questions in the NLN are very similar to the way they set up the questions in the RN program.Do you have any other pre-reqs that you still have to take or are done with your pre-reqs? I still have to take micro and I'm scared because I heard it's kinda hard. What instructor do you have? I had **** ******* and ***** *******. **** is kinda strict, many had complaints about her, ****** is kinda in between because sometimes she would be so laid back and then she would be very strict, the one that I heard everybody recommending was ***** ********* they say she's pretty good, if I get in the program again I will take her. depending on the state I've seen people get into nursing school with a low as a 2.5 Usually the school will require you to take an exit exam before siting for the boards though. Also look for nursing school that are set up for non-traditional students. When I was in nursing school I was a single mom of two. So I had to find a problem that was good, and that also understood that not everyone is fresh out of high school with no other responsibilities...good luck

@Isabella200 Thanks for the info! I only lack my communications course (which I am taking via internet class this Fall) and the micro class which I will take Summer 1 next year. I took Bio 139 this past summer, it was hard but I was glad to get it over with before the program. I have heard Micro is tough but I have heard great things about Dr. **** so I am going to try to get him. Be sure to sign up first thing when enrollment opens for Micro. It is one of the first classes to get filled, some of the time the very same day it opens (in summer anyway).

**** ******* is one of my team teachers! I didn't really pay much attention to the teachers were when I signed up because I just picked the schedule that fit my life the best. So I hope I can do well with a strict teacher. Failure is not an option so I will suck it up and do what I have to. So did you get into the clinical setting? I am most nervous about that. Did it really go from 7 am to 5 pm or did they start later/leave earlier. I am trying to figure out child care for it and I have a after school center lined up for my son but before school care is an issue. I mean, who wants to watch someone else's kid at 6:15 in the morning and then drop them off at school!?!

OH yeah, I forgot to mention, you can always go under the Region-US- Kentucky Nursing Programs Discussion forum to get more detailed info from BCTC students. There seem to be quite a few BCTC students.
