without fanfare, the good senator from vermont, bernie sanders, has continued to work behind the scenes to champion community health centers--something he has done for years (also here).

these non-profit, community-based facilities provide primary healthcare, dental care, mental health services, and low-cost prescription drugs on a sliding scale. as amendments were added in recent days to win over the liebermans and nelsons of the "greatest [undemocratic] deliberative body" in the world, sanders made sure that a $10 billion increase in funding for the health centers was included.

"this is not gonna solve all the problems of the world," senator sanders told me yesterday. "but expanding access to high quality primary health care, and low-cost prescription drugs, and mental health counseling, and dental care--which is a big issue--this is a very significant step forward.

if you walk into a health clinic and you have no insurance at all they will treat you on a sliding scale basis. so, that's affordable healthcare." ...

If you were really interested you would have investigated www.hrsa.gov and found the link right in the middle of the home page. But I've helped you out by fixing it. Just because you couldn't find it doesn't mean it and the centers don't exist.

And maybe you should have read the post a couple up form your's. herring's speaks volumes.

I did read the other posts (and am well aware of Sen. Sanders efforts on the Senate healthcare "reform" bill), and I don't need any advice from you.

I am also well aware that the heath centers exist -- I was just amused that, knowing your views on healthcare, it somehow made sense that you would post a comment on the availability of healthcare for the poor with a link that didn't work ...

Now that you've posted the correct link, I find that, as I suspected, there is no community healthcare center anywhere near my area (the closest is about three hours' drive away). This is not a great answer for lots of people. It's nice that the centers are there -- but they are limited, at present, in how many people they can help simply because of geography.

And that's another bone of contention with me. Do you really think the people in rural Mississippi will get the same healthcare as people in NYC. So not only do we need UHC but we need infrastructure too. I haven't heard anything from the UHC people saying they are gonna build anymore facilities. Some towns don't have WalMart's so what is your point.

In Boston, Community Health centers require appointments. You may be able to see a doctor on a sliding scale, but you'll still have to wait 3 weeks.

Before or after their attempt at UHC. Actually, post UHC in Mass ER visits are UP. They don't have enough docs in Mass. So again infrastructure needs to be fixed also. Go SCOTT BROWN.........
