I'm just wondering...how many nurse aides work on your floor per shift on a med/surg floor?...at a hospital where i work... two aides on day shift on a 40 bed unit...do v/s,water, bedbaths, pull pts up in bed or turn them, blood sugars, etc...on nights two aides, but lately only one aide Is this humanly possible???

Usually if our unit has only 1 aide, nurses take primary care assignments so that the aide has no more than 20 patients.

We don't have any aides, on any days/shifts period. The RNs do all the V/S, basic cares, BGLs/BSLs and just about anything else that I gather your aides do. And often there are only 2 RNs for the same number of patients you are suggesting for night duty. During the day we usually get 4-6 depending on the acuity. When we have a lot of # NOFs and full cares, we can have as many as 8 RNs on the floor for the day shift but never any aides. Why? Because our unit manager believes that if we were to have aides, the RNs would forget how to do basic care or believe that it's just not their job anymore. My ward is the only one in the whole hospital who doesn't have any aides period, most others have aides on staff but they don't work every shift, usually only days and evenings.

Day shift there are sapposed to be like 6 of us, PM shift 5, noc shift 2. it never works that way because some one always calls in, sometimes a few, and we have alot of difficult paitents.

Man that is absolutely terrible! I do not work on the floor, in SICU, but we have a 17 bed unit and if we are full we have two aides day and night. I am not sure how they are staffed on our floor though. Props to all you guys!

Zero -- not one -- none!!! All RN's except for 2 EN's -- who both work part time so I don't see much of them as I work part time too.....

We have one CNA per 10 pts.

The floor I work on is a 43 bed floor/ O day shift, there are usually 2 aides, on 2nd (mine) there's always one, & 3rd usually has one, sometimes 2!

We have 14 acute beds, two RN's and two CNA's . . . .I think we are blessed. :-)

I work nights in a 16 bed ICU. We don't have an aid. On day shift they usually have 1. Sometimes on weekends even the day shift doesn't get one.
