Left-handed nurses
I am left handed, and I do not have any problems with any equipment. When doing procedures, for ex., putting in a foley cath... instead standing on the rt side of the patients bed, you stand on the lt side of the bed, etc.

Baptist Princeton (Birmingham)
I have two friends who worked there since May of this year. So far they like it. They like their co-workers and the Nurse Manager. I almost took a job there, but changed my mind. In my opinion B'ham is not a good place to raise children Another reason which is shallow...you have to wear only white I love wearing different colors

Criminal Background check
I did go to court to have the issue settled, but it was before I when to nursing school. I had to send copies of the court records to the board of nursing, and with an explanation. Honesty is the best policy.

Criminal Background check
nurse 101 are you saying that you still have the warrant against you? I think that as long as it not a felony you still should be able to get your license. I had a similar situation- I had a speeding ticket 3 years ago, and I failed to appear in court- so I had warrant for failure to appear in court... a misdemeanor.. To make a long story short ... when I tried too get my ATT to take NCLEX, I had to send the paper work from the court house and to the Board of Nursing in my state with an explanation... I got my ATT, and I passed my Boards!

Confidentiality
I work in a small hospital where you can pull up surgeries on the computer for the whole week. I was going to ambulatory surgery to have something done...well...when I came in to work one day and a Rn asked me what was wrong. I said what are you talking about? She said that she saw my name in the computer and just wondered. I do not feel comfortable with the fact that anyone can pull up that kind of info w/o a password.

Exhausted night shifter
Cover your windows with a blanket or a towel to make your room very dark. Get a fan also. It will drown out the sounds outside, and it will make the room cool for a good nite...oops... a good days sleep. :)

How old are you?
I am thirty-two yrs old and working on my BSN. This is my second degree. There are several in my nursing class who are in their thirties. You are not alone.

a student wants to know how you found your special "place" in nursing
I think a good way to decided is to work at at hospital part-time or prn. I was a unit sec at nite as a float, so I got to experience almost all the floors. Right now I am a multi-skilled tech in CTRU (open heart recovery unit), but I do float on the med-surg floors and units. Floating gives me an idea where I want to be once I finish my BSN.

It's a nurse's market
You know what I don't understand? Since there is a nursing shortage- why not increase the nurses pay, better benefits, and most of all respect- then maybe the nurses will stay, and NO MORE MANDATORY OVERTIME!!! This would save money than having to pay overtime, and the nurses will not be burned out.

Do we get what we deserve?
ALRIGHT NURSEJANEDOUGH! I SECOND THAT! I was a CNA in LTC, and they get no repect. They are treated like mules! I'm right now getting my BSN, and once I finish- the NA will have my repect. Been there, done that. They too deserve more pay!

rude doctors
Thanks everyone for all those replies. They help soo, sooo, much...speaking of ignoring the docs temper tantrum- it reminds me of a story. One of the unit sec. had a doctor one morning and starting yelling at her because he could not find a chart. She just walked away. She refuses to talked to that way. The charge nurse saw that she did this, and guess what? The charge nurse got all into the doc's face and began apologizing for the missing chart, and even the nurse manager did the same. They both started looking for the chart.lol. The unit sec. just shook her head. What a sight!

rude doctors
I've worked in a hospital for quite some time as a nursing assistant and a unit secretary. In January I start my nursing clinicals. I am excited on becoming a RN, but there is one problem- some of the doctor's attitudes. I have wittnessed countless times when a doctor has a temper tantrum. And please don't let him/her have an audience...it may result in getting charts thrown everywhere. How should a nurse handle this in a professional way when this happens?
