first i want to say that i am new here, and am learning all the ends and outs.

in any case, as stated iam in need of direction. i have plans to begin lpn classes in may. but i am not so sure after reading through this site that i am starting in the right direction.

my goal is to become a nurse practioner, but i have no real idea where to begin. if im doing the right thing taking th lpn course or not.

any starting point is fine with me as long as the end result is what i hope to acheive.

i am totally confused however. should i be going for an associates or something instead. who knows. i pray that someone can help me and soon so that i don't make the wrong move. i don't want to spend wasted time and make this journey any longer than i have to. i am so excited and i want to stay that way you know what i mean.

getting discouraged is the worst thing that could happen right now. so if any one here could help me getting on the right path i would be so thankful.

Why do you want to be a NP? What about the job appeals to you? In my part of the world it is quite a difficult programme to get into. If you go the BScN route you are looking at, at least 8 years in school, plus many universities ask for actual work experience before they accept a student.

no matter how hard a program is to get into you shouldnt stop your dream of wanting to be a np. i do however think the lpn program would not help you in your path quite as well as getting into an rn program.

The great thing about getting your LPN first is that you can work for a decent wage while continuing on in school. The other reason I'd say definitely get your LPN is because you are already accepted in a program that is starting now! RN programs can be difficult to get into and I'd guess that the very earliest you would be able to get in one at this point would be next winter and by that time you'd be almost done with your LPN. I did the LPN to ADN bridge and it only added one semester to my education but again in the meantime I had something in my hand and what I consider a very valuable nursing background from my LPN education. Do whatever you think is best for you but I believe that if you truly want to be a nurse or nurse practictioner no matter what your path you should be happy and proud of your accomplishment. To get accepted into most NP programs, you will need to be an RN who is educated at the baccalaureate level. In other words, a BSN (bachelor of science in nursing) degree is one of the typical prerequisites of most NP programs.

i was in the same situation as you. i was completely confused. the fact is, get your priorities in order.. 1) do you need money? 2)how long can you afford to be in school? 3) how long do you really want to be in school? 4)what other goals do you have besides school?

honestly, dont get discouraged. my goal is to get an msn/mph too but i had to start out as an lvn b/c i need to make money. i plan on doing my lvn to bsn and then doing my masters part-time. it takes much longer but if you're really passionate, nothing will hold you back..

I am doing the LPN-RN-BSN-MSN thing! LOL

I know that I would LOVE to be a NP or CNM, but for now I NEED the money, I WANT the experience and this is the right path for me. I know I don't want to do family practice, my heart lies in L&D but where I live isn't very CNM friendly and their aren't many jobs. So for know I am working my way up the ladder. I don't really need to know what I will do until I have completed most of my BSN, when I need to start applying to MSN/CNM programs.
