I'm curiouse about the hours and pay for RN. I know that most hospitals and RN jobs are 12 hrs shift 3 days a week. If you only work 12 hours 3 days a week, that's only 36 hours a week. My question is, do you only get pay for the 36 hrs that you work, or 40?

I guess what I do is considered mandatory overtime. When I work 36 hours, that's what I get paid for. But once a month we do a mandatory fourth shift in one week so when you divide the hours for that shift (12 hours divided by 4 is 3 hours a week) it spreads out to be 39 hours a week (with break included). But during that week when we do that mandatory 4th shift we get paid overtime for part of it since it technically is over 40 hours for that week. Hope this didn't confuse you!!

I have an add on question to this: if you're working OT is that counted after 36 hours or after 50 hours?

In some hospitals OT starts after 80hrs in 2 weeks; in ours it's anything pver 40 in 1 week; I do 3 12s and get paid for 36. The first 4 hours of an extra shift is regular pay.

I work 3-12 hours shifts per week, each actually 12.5 hours long because heaven forbid they pay for lunch, and I get paid for 36 per week, 72 hours per pay period.

I have to physically work more than 40 hours per week (sick and vacation do not count) to get OT past 40 hours.

To confusing the situation, we also have a weekend option (WO) that works 4-12 hours shifts per PAY PERIOD (every other weekend) and they are actually paid for 72 hours each pay period, despite only working 48 hours and then they get appropriate full time benefits like PTO, insurance, etc....
