Hello everyone, I a new here and need your input. I am in Germany at the moment and cannot find a job here. My problem is that I will be here for another three years. So, by the time I get back to the US I will be out of the nursing field for four years! I am at the moment working towards my RN degree through Excelsior College; that is the only thing that I can do. I am glad that I can do that; so I dont forget everything. But, what do you guys think. Will I still be able to get a job in the US when I get back? I am keeping my LPN license active; just in case something does pop up.

you may have to take a refresher course or two...

Hi,

I went through the same situation. We just returned from a 3 year tour in Italy in December. I am a LPN, but I could not find work there (the military hospital already had corpsman and didn't utilize LPN's). I did CEU's and was a school nurse volunteer the whole time. I have just started a 4 semester ADN program. I would suggest volunteer work and possibly maybe a degree in something else while you are there. The Navy Relief Society had a tuition assistance program for spouses and there might be something similar where you are. (If you are military...I don't know that you are.) I kind of wish that I had gotten a degree in Psychology or business while I was there.

I can bet there will be a ton of work for you when you get back. Good luck with your studies! How hard is it to do that program?

Yes, my husband is in the military. I am working on my ADN with Excelsior, otherwise there is nothing here. As far as the course goes, its not so bad. I have completed two exams so far and they were hard, but you can do it. It requires alot of reading and you do have to motivate yourself to sit down and read for a couple of hours. They have a website at yahoo for Excelsior students and you can get alot of help from them. They always have the answers and other people that have taken the exam can tell you what to focus on.

We were in Germany for a long while, and I had no trouble getting a nursing job on our return to the states. So....just keep studying towards your RN because at least you will be able to put on any employment application that you weren't "idle" for three years, but working on another nursing degree.

I became a Red Cross CPR Instructor during part of my stay in Germany, and kept up on my CEUs as well as kept my BCLS card current. You'll be just fine....don't worry! Have fun in Germany! It's a great place to be! :kiss :)
