Home health care agencies are stepping up their recruitment efforts

GREATER METROPLEX-Since swapping the fast-paced world of high technology for the home health care field, human resources director Angela Bell has been on a hiring spree for Plano-based nonprofit Home Health Services.

"We've hired 22 nurses since April and we currently have 10 positions open," former Alcatel employee Bell said recently. That includes positions for branch managers, case managers-who must be registered nurses-and other staff.

Fifty percent of Medicare licensed home care agencies have closed in Texas over past 2 years due to Medicare Prospective Payment System. (Agencies get paid a lump sum for homecare episode, rather than per visit. Could make 6 visits or 35 for same diagnosis but different patients needs).

My PDN Peds agency has 13 skilled kids...I currently have approx 240 hours/week of unstaffed hours and OT...so far not even advertising sign on bonuses, a revamped pay scale and comprehensive paid training...no previous experience required is bringing anyone in.

We have the double wammy against us...Peds and homecare.
