I qualified September 2004 as a nurse within the NHS in England and I am now considering a future career within the United States. I would like to talk with people who have had similar experience of this and those who have made the full transition, I want to know whether it is worth it? I am currently a respiratory nurse with an interest in Intensive Care and Accident and Emergency nursing. Thank you all very much for your time. Can I suggest you look in the UK and International sections? There are loads of people there who have made the move or are about to - their experiences may shed some light on this for you.

Training in the US, as well as Canada, is quite different that what you received in the UK. Over here, you are required to have training in all areas before you graduate, not in the one area as you have in the UK. Depending on the specifics as to what you did in your program, if you are an Adult-trained nurse, you will have it the easiest out of the three areas to make up the additional hours that you will be required to do. Just do e search on this forum, and you will find all of the information that you need.

I take it you qualified from Soton uni?

Unfortunatly you will not have the requirements to nurse in US as they dont train the way the US like nurses to be trained. The only nurses who seem to have no problem getting sponsered over here are the pre P2000 nurses because they did general training. You can make up hours but the uni's are proving very difficult to allow nurses to make up the requirements for the US.

Would I be wrong in thinking that the training in the uk post-PK2000 (specialised etc...) has been tailored so that nurses trained in the UK can only work in the UK. As in the UK uni's/NHS won't help you move to the US 'cause after all, they paid you train so they limit you in order to retain you in the NHS ?
