i have completed my Nclex_Rn and i want to start working. As i dont have experience i find it difficult to get in to a hospital....do you think its a good idea to start in an LTC? Do they hire RNs? And anybody know of any LTc that is hiring in bayarea?

I will appreciate any info/suggestions.

Look for a job in a skilled facility that has a subacute/short term unit. You can really learn great assessment skills working in a SNF...IVs, wound vacs, trachs...almost everything they do on a med surg floor at the hospital.

And yes...SNFs hire RNs. At my facility most of the nurses are RNs.

CapeCodmermaid,

Thanks for your reply, do you know of any LTCs with subacute unit in bay area? I applied to couple of LTCs here, but it seems they are not hiring RNs.

Sorry- I work on the other side of the country and am more familiar with Cape Cod Bay than with the Bay area on the left coast! At my facility, I have 9 regular staff nurses....they are ALL RNs. I'm sure you'll find something soon. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply i appreciate that.

I used to tell new nurses to start out in the hospital to improve their skills and assessment skills. with the increasing aquity of patients in LTC, nurses now have to know their stuff to work there so going there after graduation now will give you tons of good experience!

Don't forget about the time management skills. You have to be able to multi task like a pro if you work LTC. When I worked in the hospital I had a lot of trouble with time management. Somehow I do not think that I would have near the trouble I once did.

where i am, working over is not the same as overtime. we only get ot for any time worked after 40 hours in a week.

did a little searching (and now i know) :D...

http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/faq_overtime.htm

"in california, the general overtime provisions are ... one and one-half times his or her regular rate of pay for all hours worked over eight hours in any workday and over 40 hours in the workweek."
