Working full time while in school

In my experience, they tell you when to go to clinicals. They have sites and times prearranged, as well as which instructor will be at each site. In my class they do not give us a choice, I would be surprised if your school would.

You may want to email the director of the program to find out more regarding what times clinicals will be.

I know it can be done if you have a flexible schedule. In my program

You are assigned clinical time,no choice. Don't let what looks like a day offfool you.we have a lot of mandatory and 'suggested' extra things that are not on the schedule. If your boss can allow flexibility you can do it..if not find a job that will.

Has anyone worked full time and attended nursing school? I work M-F 7-4 currently at a hospital in the DFW area. I have completed all of my prereqs and am hoping for 2011 admission into the school of nursing. I am not in a position where I can quit or go part time in my position. What is the possibility that I can get clinicals in the evening or weekend hours? I understand that there will be lots of reading, homework, etc. I am concerned at this point about the clinical hours. Thanks.

The school I am at has generic days, generic nights, and accelerated day options. It really depends on your school. Mine also publishes the set schedule for classes and clinicals for all three programs. As others have already said, I am sure there will be additional things not on the schedule. However, the night program at my school is specifically for folks who HAVE to still work.

I know of a school in my area that has an evenings/weekends program. Clinicals are on the the weekends and class is one night a week. However, those types of programs are not in abundance. That is a pretty restrictive schedule you have. If it is at all possible to work 12 hours instead of 9 and work on the weekends you could free up enough time to do a traditional program. Just a thought.

It all depends on the school. I am in a nights/weekend program which allows me to work. We have classes two nights during the week and then our clinicals are on the weekend. If your school offers something like this you should be okay. Good luck!

the first semester of my nursing program was very stressful because we had 4 very demanding classes + clinicals. i usually just worked on the weekends very part time. now, in my second semester and continuing on until graduation, we will have one class at a time (8 weeks for each class). during my second semester i have been working full time (3 12 hour shifts a week at a hospital) and hope to continue doing so until graduation.

so i guess it is possible, it just depends on how flexible your work is willing to be with you.

I have worked part time throughout nursing school and been able to do so without (much) problem. Full time would be very difficult though!!
