Love this blog!! Trying to guide my daughter and feeling frustrated. Which route is the best to go. Adn to bsn or directly to a csu for bsn. Even with her high school record which csu ask for grades in sciences etc she will have a hard time getting in. 4.14, ap bio and stats, well rounded Why do they look at these facts if your considered pre nursing until pre req are complete?
Our local jc and csu are impossible to get in within even a two years time. Santa barb city and San Diego city have great programs but she can't apply till pre reqs are done. Some have four ore reqs some have eight. It makes no sense to us. She is taking eng and math now at a local college while she is in her senior year. Will take anatomy in spring and then a few over summer school. Still though unable to apply until summer 2015.
Any advice??

Take a good look at the nursing job situation in your area.

Most employers in California prefer/require BSN, so if she's planning to work here in CA it would be better to pursue that instead of the ADN.
Wish I could explain the rhyme and reason behind the discrepancies between schools' pre-req requirements, but alas, I can't.

I agree with Meriwhen. California is one of the states that has a statistically higher than average amount of time between graduation and landing that first job. A BSN is one of the first things employers will look at when evaluating a pool of new graduate job candidates. All the best to your daughter!

I would definitely go the BSN route. I know that in my area that acute care settings only higher BSN prepared RNs now. The CSU I went to did NOT have a waiting list and went by a ranking system. I would highly recommend finding a program that ranks their applicants and then accepts the top applicants. That way your hard work will pay off and earn you a spot in the program. I believe that to apply for most of those programs that you must have your prerequisites done before applying, but you wont' be placed on a wait list.

Your daughter sounds like a strong student. Like everyone else, go strait to BSN and don't even waste her potential and time. So long as she remains a strong student she will breeze through merit based applications once she finishes her prerequisites, lottery is what it is, it's luck of the draw. Where she goes for her prerequisites matters little. It would be better if your kid does her own research in my opinion so she herself understands the struggles and facts. The fact that she has to finish the majority of prerequisites before applying to a program is a norm, I don't really understand the last question in first paragraph.
