A few months ago there was a toddler that came in to the ER with a lac to his ear. The lac was about an inch or more and it was all the way through the ear. It looked clean, as if someone snipped his ear in 2 with some scissors.
Soon afterward, another case involved a child with a deep 4-5" gash on his forehead. This was so deep you could see his skull.
On both occasions the parent said the child fell out of their bed and cut themselves on their own bed. I would think that most manufacturers would design beds out of safe, dull materials; but that's just me.
Has anyone here experienced the same sort of story? My internal BS radar was going off.

If the story doesn't match the injury...report it. We are mandatory reporters as healthcare professionals. That said, kids are injury prone and no matter how "safe" you manufactory furniture/toys they will get hurt.

That's a tough call. I know there have been very embarrassing injuries my 3-year-old has had to go to the ER for. It is embarrassing because you constantly worry about what people will think of you, especially when it is something they 'shouldn't' have gotten hurt on. For instance, she went chin first into the corner of a table and bit through part of her lip, it looked WAY worse than the story gave credit, and it was very awkward in the hospital.
Kids are very resilient, but they do seem to accomplish the unbelievable when it comes to hurting themselves.

Perhaps they're using the same bed their parents or even grandparents slept in, which has sharp edges and does not meet current safety guidelines?
JMHO.

i cant picture how a kid can "fall out of bed" and injure themselves ON the bed......now if some roughhousing was going on, maybe......
