What is wrong when soft spot grows shut too soon?

here are pictures of this condition...now you see why my dh called my son "football head" !

Note the pointed occiput!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my son could not lay normally on his back...his head was either left or right!

Thank you all for such quick and helpful replies. We too have always thought his head looked like a football but reg ped said no biggie. Concern was noted by urgent care md when taken in for ear infection today. We were kind of surprised he schedueled the ct for christmas eve. I am glad to know that it is treatable. Have reassured Dad who is currently sleeping on my sofa to insure he does not miss this appt. Unfortunately mom and dad are not together and are in the midst of a custody battle dad wants joint mom wants soul. Definately not making matters any better. Fortunatley Dad has good insurance and has carried Riley since he was born. For the moment they seem to be putting everything aside for Riley's sake. I have read that it could be that the cartlidge(sp) could just be really tough there. That is what we are hoping for but will keep you updated. Thank you everyone it is awsome to know I have somewhere to go when stuff like this comes up.

I hope it is indeed the situation you described and that treatment is the least complicated, most easily-recoverable form. I know how they must feel. I hope all their questions are answered soon...let us know, ok??

my daughter is now 10 years old and doc and when she was a baby her soft spot closed. does anyone know if i should be worried about surgury?

This just made me cry. I have an eight month old that is getting a CT scan on monday and has to go to occupational/physical therapy. He is eight months old and cannot sit up, crawl, or anything like that. I had went to our family doctor and he ordered an ultrasound but tehy said everything came back normal. I took it upon myself to get a second opinion and that is when a second doctor told me his soft spot had closed up, which is not giving his brain room to grow and is slowing his development down. I have two other children that are fine, I've never had any health problems with them, and now this is happening. I don't like the fact that he will probably have to have surgery, but this post really helps me. I feel that if he does have to have something, I am now ready for it to the best I can be for something like this, Thank You SmilingBluEyes :)

If the skull fuses too quickly, and there is a lack of time spent with fontanelles, then the skull can become misshapen and/or unable to hold the growing brain.
