What to do prior to NS?

heyy everyone!! okay, so i start the nursing program next month and i have done EVERYTHING required prior to the start date. but, is there anything else i can do??? i hate to sit here doing nothing for the next months and i want to do extra so i'm HOPEFULLY ready for classes in august. my advisor told me to relax and not worry, but i don't know about that... haha. i read in another thread several weeks ago that some students volunteered at hospitals, read the first few pages in their nursing books, etc. what do ya'll recommend? :nurse: thank you!!!

Sleep in (something you're not going to be able to do for a while), catch up on your favorite books, watch any movies you've been wanting to see, take a trip. I would not study ahead, unless an instructor has sent out letters talking about required reading ahead. You have no way of knowing what an instructor will emphasize so I would hold off on studying. There'll be plenty of time for studying later. For now, enjoy yourself!

I agree 100%. You won't have time for anything but studying, making care plans, and reading nursing texts. Do some fun things before nursing school completely consumes your life.lol. seriously.

I'm also starting nursing school this fall and I know most people say to relax, have fun, etc. and I don't know about you, but that's not really my personality. I want to be focusing on something and putting this nervous energy about starting nursing school to use somewhere. I've been reviewing my medical math textbook and I bought an NCLEX review book and have been reading that and doing practice questions from the nursing fundamentals section. Doing those things has helped me relax a little bit since now I'm in more of the "student" mindset since it's been 2 years since I finished my last prereq and have been waiting to start NS.

Good luck!

I've been looking through the posts for study tips, time management advice, etc. I also have a student nurse planner which is awesome. It has pages of study tips, info on clinicals, what prof's will expect, all kinds of stuff. I highly recommend it. (Saunders student nurse planner, volume 5) When we are supposed to be studying we won't have time to read about "how to study" I know nursing school is much different than regular college. Also yahoo has some nursing groups you can join. One of them has tons of files other members have submitted. They have info on everything from popular drugs, care plans, to NCLEX. Hope this helps. Good luck.

i picked up those "made incredibly easy books" to get a head start ..so when my instructor lectures about a topic, its going to be somewhat familiar.

I started reading this book as soon as I posted this thread up called "Student Nurse Handbook: Difficult Concepts Made Easy" (2nd Edition) by Twiname and Boyd. It's actually REALLY helpful... Like I said I just started it and so far I've read about studying techniques, APA format, and time management skills. It seems to be really good and I recommend it to you too! It's giving me a pretty good idea of what's expected in nursing school. I skimmed to the later chapters and it also covers documentation, critical thinking skills, drug calculations, etc! I'll take a look at that book you suggested also! Thanks!!!! :nuke:

I'll have to check this book out!:wink2:

Sit back and relax. There will be no time for that when school starts. :)
