Well, it's over....

I used to work at a family practice clinic that also ran a walk-in. I was the only nurse there and frequently worked with 3 or 4 doctors together along with helping with the walk-in. I enjoyed the work but the pace was killing me. If I was 21 years old, it would have been easier, but I'm not, I'm 41. The nurse they hired to replace me is 22...she'll do okay.

I'm now off to another clinic with 7 family practice docs, 1 gyne, 1 dietitian and a pharmacist on staff. I'll be one of 6 nurses. Better pay, better working conditions...I know I'll be happy.

My last day was today and after working there for 13 months I came to realize just how much I've come to care for some of the patients and how much a lot of those (especially elderly) patients came to rely on me. Several cried when I told them I was leaving. I said goodbye to one of them today and nearly broke down and cried when I hugged him goodbye. I held it together until I got into my car and then cried all the way home. I won't miss the job, the staff, the docs or the pace...but I will miss my patients. :o

So onward on to bigger and better things.

Congrats and sorry all at the same time :). I know how hard it can be to leave a group of clients/patients you love. Hoping that your new job is everything you want (and how nice it's going to be for you to have some other nurses to back you up - it's so hard to fly alone!)

Evidently you are a caring person. I worked for many years for a group of MDs who treated chronic disorders, so we saw the same people over and over. You get involved with their lives. I know how you feel and can say that there is a whole new group of people waiting for you!!

Laura, I went through the same thing last week. It was hard leaving after a year. Kept worrying if I gave it enough time and if I'll be challenged in the new job. Now that I'm ready to start my new position I'm really excited. I know that if it's not what I expected I can go back to my old job. I stayed on per diem so that I can keep up my floor experience.

Laura

I empathize with you, at times some of the pts are almost like family.

the new girl will have the energy and I hope she has the patience.. wow your old job sounds like one busy crazy pace.. :) ..but they willl miss you I am sure

I will be interested in hearing aboutyour new job. :)

It sounds like a good move for you. You will get to know more patients and these too will be grateful you came into thier lives. :balloons: :

Well nurses, I'm just finishing my second week at my new place. Do I like it? WEll...let me put it this way...yesterday I went back to my old place to pick up my last paycheques and waundered around the nurse's station. All I could think of was that I was soooooo glad that I wasn't there anymore. My new place is very structured and much better organized. They have two triage desks where two nurses muddle through countless phone calls from patients. They have a float nurse who sees patients for immunizations, dressing changes, standing med refills, BP's etc and also takes a lot of the load off the triage nurses by looking up lab results. They have a derm clinic where we spend the morning paring warts and liquid nitrogen treatments followed by a procedure clinic where we assist the doc with minor procedures. That afternoon they have an immunization clinic. We all rotate and take our turns doing each job. Today I'm on triage, yesterday I was on derm/immunization. But I especially like float which I did on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Unfortunately I'm not finished with my old place yet. I went to pick up my final paycheques yesterday only to find that they cheated me out of my 4% vacation pay. :angryfire I had a feeling they would do that but was kind of hoping they wouldn't. So yesterday evening I looked up Canadian labour laws and found the document pertaining to vacation pay and 4%. I shall call the office manager and very nicely tell her to PAY UP!!!

Laura

I think your new job sounds fun.. diversity is wonderful

Last dig...like I said, they are known for that. I called the office manager and very nicely told her I thought there had been a mistake on my 4%. She started to argue with me, saying she gave me everything that we saved up for me. (apparantly they put 4% of every paycheque in a "pot") She was very obviously preparing to hunker down and argue the point with me. She back pedaled really quickly when I told her I spoke with the Ministry of Labour and told them what they said....including quoting legislation. We got off the phone and an hour later she called and told me my cheque would be ready on Monday. :chuckle

So I am now finally free of that place. action-smiley-033.gif
