This might be a weird question, buttt....i'm a new nurse, and so far I enjoy what i'm doing, i've also met some really nice people on my floor and they do make the day go by a lot smoother and faster. However, i'm known to have quite a sense of humor, and I find myself laughing (not hysterically) at almost anything that I find funny lol. I try to hold it back, but sometimes it just spills out, and while I'm not immature at work, i'd say i'm quite mature for my age (20),...i don't know if people think i'm weird or immature because of it :stone even though no one ever makes it seem as though they're bothered. For instance, something happened on my floor today...A resident who everyone thinks is the most horrible grumpiest old man, was talking so much crap about how he hated the food, the people bla bla, and while I tried to calm him down, I was also giggling and trying to hold back my laugh.
I just don't know what to do to control my laughter.

I am not a nurse yet but I am guilty of inappropriately laughing. It's always been that way for me. I do it when I am nervous to, laugh and smile, judges don't find it funny FYI. I don't know what to tell you. lol
Once my friend and I were talking after class and were laughing so hard we both were crying. We parted ways and on my way to the car I kept thinking about what we were talking about and I kept laughing more. I was alone though now and students were looking at me like I was off my rocker. It has happened in class as well. No bueno.
I also remember at work (non nursing) my friend and I were laughing to the point of crying again, we were finally calmed down and drying our eyes when I group of new employees were touring and stopped by our section. I just imagined these poor newbies walking buy and it looks as though we are crying at work. They probably wondered what they were getting into. Of course I said something to my friend and that thought made us laugh all over again.

Haha I do that too! I always remember things I think are funny from earlier when I'm riding the bus or at work, and burst out laughing. I try so hard not too, but it never ever works.
I don't think you're weird for laughing at things like the mean old guy, it's awesome to have a sense of humor. (haha even though you're probably not supposed to laugh)

I once had a coworker that had your sense of humor! I called her my "angel"! She brought a sense of joy and happiness to the floor. Never lose that, it is a precious gift.
Most people can appreciate a sense of humor. Thankfully it seems as though the OP's co workers do. Some people not so much.
When we were in skills lab doing our returns a few weeks ago we had to partner up for the mock injections. My friend gets really nervous so to try to ease her nervousness when she was asking me about allergies and the standard protocol, I started being silly. She said it helped her so much to relax and my instructor just laughed.
Had it been another one of my friends though, it would have totally through him off and stressed him out. Just depends on the person. I pray I work with good humoured people.

Always keep your sense of humor. You will be someones "angel" wherever you go.

Sounds like you have a gift that will serve you well. I did my final rotation in the ICU, and I can tell you of more than one hysterical laugh fit I had with another student in the med room! Any little thing would set us off in there, or while eating lunch.

Just let it out!!! It is awsome that you can giggle and laugh in some of the toughest times. And I am sure that your brain has an off switch for when it's not appropriate. Don't give it another thought. There are plenty of us grumpy people in the world to balance things out.

I agree..as a new nurse I can agree that our job is taxing and stressful. If you are not able to laugh then the job may become more of a chore than something you enjoy. Stay happy and keep laughing..you will bring a smile to more than just your patients.

I'll be honest....I tend to joke/laugh/comment a bit at work...and it's because we have such a close knit bond among us staff....most of my patients tend to get along with me, and I never get a complaint about my sense of humor.
I find that it really helps me keep a even keel at work and it really can help out quite a bit with difficult/moody patients. I enjoy what I do, and if I HAVE to be at work, well, we're gonna have a good time! such is life.....keep that sense of humor, it'll help you more than you know....
