Wages

I have always been uncomfortable discussing salary during interviews, but I feel that with my experience I should earn more then other new grads. I want to stay working where I am now, but don't want to seem like I am desperate and will accept any amount of pay. Any advise from fellow nurses?

It would help if you said what your "experience" is in, but it doesn't actually really make a difference. New grad salaries are pretty much non-negotiable in any decent facility as the only experience employers care about is nursing experience. If you like where you work and there's a good new grad program, you should really count your blessings.

What is your experience that sets you apart from other new grads?

What experience is this that sets you apart? If you are a new grad, your salary will be that of a new grad. It matters not if you have 10 years in the business world or are 22 fresh out of college. Your nursing experience is the same.

It depends on what your experience is in. At my hospital, they took my years of experience (in the hospital) and halved them. So I started out making what a nurse who had been working for 6 years was making. If you have no healthcare experience, then why would you start out making more? Like PP said, you have no nursing experience. It all depends on what type of experience and the hospital you are working for.

Hospital systems in the metro area where I reside will start new grad RNs at a higher rate of pay if they have LPN/LVN experience. For instance, a new RN with 10 years of LPN experience would be paid as an RN with five years of experience.

However, I doubt the OP is an LPN. It would be nice to know what type of experience she has that warrants more money. :)
