Are there any unemployed RN's on this forum who are doing any volunteer work to keep their resume's looking sharp and active? I'm considering it and would love to hear some thoughts or advice on it. Is it something that will look good on your resume as being at least proactive? I've thought of volunteering for the American Heart Association or even at a hospital.
Thanks in advance and have a great holiday season!

Hi.
I'll be interested to read any replies you get. I've had no luck in my job search and have thought of volunteering at a hospital or clinic to make connections.

I've been volunteering at a hospice while looking for work as an RN. I don't function as an RN in the hospice-just do personal care stuff. But at least volunteering in a medical setting it something to put on my resume. There just no jobs for inexperienced nurses where I am.
After graduating and having trouble finding a work I looked into volunteering as an RN at a hospital in my area. I was told they only take RN volunteers with experience. The RN volunteers at that hospital do paper work so it's just as well b/c I wanted to volunteer in a direct care capacity.

I volunteer once a month just for the sake of volunteering. Working with less fortunate people who are so appreciative revives my faith in humanity.

Hello. "Volunteering to keep resumes looking sharp and active" to me would be something specifically involving nursing care to patients. For example, one of the nurses at my church is involved in great volunteer work in the Doctors Without Borders program. She has traveled and given nursing care to patients in very interesting countries including Haiti. Perhaps you could call your state board of nursing about RN job opportunties and RN volunteer options. Best wishes!

Agree. A medical mission seems like a good way for a new grad to get some experience to put on his resume. Also call hospitals to see what they accept in the way of RN's who wish to volunteer. Good luck in your job hunt.
