USSC Suture Conversion

Greetings:

We have just been switched to US Surgical Suture. The surgeons dislike it immensely. Some have had problems with needles popping off on non-popoff sutures, wound dehiscence, and other things.

The chromic is especially crappy, and one of the reps had the N*E*R*V*E* to tell the surgeon that she wasn't tying her knots correctly!!

Give me back Ethicon!

Any other experiences out there??

Donna

Well, I have seen more of the opposite-surgeons preferring USSC over ethicon!

Anyway, the chromis suture is going to soon be obsolete due to studies showing a link to the suture and CJD...believe it or not...so, then they will be upset again when they have to use Vicryl or Monocryl...:)

Kathyann,

I would be interested in learning more about the corrolation between chromic and cjd.

Thanks,

Paula

We use Vicryl, monocryl, chromic gut, plain gut, ethilon, PDS-pretty much anything and the surgeon's love it; i guess since they are used to it.

we have not used chromic in several years because of the threat or percieved threat of CJD. now vicryl is the suture of choice in these parts.

Pardon me for asking, but what is CJD?

CJD stands for Creutzfeldt -Jacob Disease in which the CNS is affected. It's caused by a virus- you might see dementia- diagnosed by brain biopsy.

I may be wrong, as I often am, but I believe that it is the human form of MAD COW.
