  1. I have never heard of a non-nurse in an OR manager role. What is his background? Sounds ludicrous to me...

"I cannot believe you all work so hard for so little money. Do you all belong to unions? You should get together and demand your worth. For holding the pager I expect $30 an hour. For working an hour on call I expect on a week night $ 85 an hour. I wouldent get out of bed for anything less." Are you getting this in London? Because I researched the pay in the UK in hopes of traveling there sometime, and it appeared much LESS than we make here in the states-even for temp work... I am surprised to hear that you would make so much more for call, when I always thought that the pay was higher here. Where are you exactly??
  3. Hi, We have a physician who would like propofol used on all GI procedures rather than the standard soup of Versed, Demeral, or Fentanyl. I was wondering how many facilities out there have an anesthetist present for all GI procedures, and how does the facility get reimbursed in this senario? Our anesthetists are stating that medicare and probably most insurance companies will not reimburse for anesthesia services present for a scope. Thanks for the input, Kathy
  4. May I ask how reimbursement is on procedures that have an anesthetist present? We have a physician that wants anesthesia for every case, but we are concerned about reimbursement.
  5. Actually, California accepts an Excelsior degree. I have an Excelsior degree, and a California license. Fact is, I worked as a travel nurse, and had no problems with any state accepting my excelsior degree, although I did not practice in Illinois, had no desire to! Kathy
  6. Would anybody be willing to share your PICC policy and documentation tools? Please email if you are willing to [email protected] or fax to 417-678-7877 to the attention of Kathy Morris. Thanks:)
  7. We also do all of these modalities, but are a small hospital doing about 60 surgical/endoscopy cases per month. I was wondering if the patients are scheduled to come in at your hospitals for per-ops, or just walk in? We are having an issue with the walk ins, and I feel we need to set up a different system..Thanks:)
  8. Where are you that the nurse manager's are paid bonuses?? I want to apply!!:) Sorry, but this practice is not happening in my corner of the world....and I have truly never heard of this. The only people getting large bonuses in healthcare that I have seen are CEO's, not nurse managers. In my department, it is a struggle to get everything approved that I asked for in the budget-coming under it is impossible!!!
  9. You sound very frustrated with your nurse manager, and that is a shame...really. But, not all managers are like this and if you are truly as frustrated as you seem, then perhaps you should air your frustrations on a more useful venue...such as in your facility's DON office.
  10. I think all OR RN's should be required to learn all aspects of the job, and scubbing cases is certainly a vital aspect of the job. The problem at our hospital is that we are small, and have limited staff, and there is often not enough staff to allow the RN to be in the crsub role:( Whenever possible, we change roles.
  11. Ah, the ten minute betadine scrub.........:) We recently switched to duraprep, so far like it a whole lot better!
  12. Well, I have seen more of the opposite-surgeons preferring USSC over ethicon! Anyway, the chromis suture is going to soon be obsolete due to studies showing a link to the suture and CJD...believe it or not...so, then they will be upset again when they have to use Vicryl or Monocryl...:)
  13. Carcha, I have traveled around a bit, and the only sponges I have seen with strings have strings that are radiopaque........
  14. OK, your post was good, and funny! I laughed when I read in print what we all know is truth! OK, here is mine- SHOE COVERS!! Why do some hospitals still require the wearing of shoe covers under the assumption that this is an infection control issue??!! Are they laying the patient on the floor??? And, for God's sake, when the case is over, and you have worn shoe covers for protecting your shoes from blood spills-take them off!

Before you will be ready to travel, you will need to invest some time on the job getting some varied OR experience (or , experience in whatever area you plan to travel) for at least one year, and more is recommended for OR travel. The pay when traveling is the same usually, no matter what your specialty.
