USC New Grad Program 2011

I have found other threads for previous programs very helpful so I thought I would start one for the new program so that we can talk about it.

So I applied the first day apps opened & am in the process of preparing to send my supplementary stuff. In the personal statement it asks to list your two units of interest and why. I called to ask them if they wanted a general response (like 'med/surg') or to be more specific (like 'med/surg ortho'). They said to be specific. My problem is I don't know all the units. Does anyone know the different units that may (or may not) be hiring new grads?

Also, do you think it would be too far-fetched to choose the ER as one of my units of choice? I ask this because in my job search I have learned that ER new grad positions are extremely competitive & often times the positions available are given to internal applicants only or people with some other kind of "in." All my training, experience, and certifications that I have acquired have been in preparation for ER nursing... So I believe that I am qualified, but I don't want to shoot for something that is impossible & miss out on a position in a less competitive unit.

What do you think?

So they are going to hire only 10 people at USC or just in the ICU ?

10 total is what she told me. For one of the ICUs, only two...

(Reply sent from my Motorola Droid)

I was hoping at least they hire 40 :)

Thank you vanessa and everyone that have provided the info. Even though I wont get a call from USC for sure (mistakenly picked L&D and Postpartum while USC dont have those depts) I am still happy that everyone on this forum is keeping all of us informed. Happy Thanksgiving guys/gals and hopefully next week some of us here will get a call from USC.

Happy Thanksgiving to every one.

Thank you for sharing the information.

Has any one applied to St. Jude hospital?

@ woodsider - I applied to st Jude, just got the don't call us we'll call you email. If you read last programs thread they decided to hire everyone internally so I am not holding my breath. But maybe this round will be better.

As far as USC goes the first email I sent bounced back because the attatchments were too large, I made them smaller then sent them back. No failure email on that one. But did not call to confirm receipt, now kicking myself and worried I am one of the 400 incomplete applications.

Onestepatatime, thanks for the info.I received 2 " do not call " emails from 2 different persons. Very strange... Just like you I don't hope they will call me. Happy Thanks Giving!

Well it looks like the wait is over for some of us. I just got a very polite rejection e-mail. Unfortunately I wasnt chosen:crying2:. Good Luck to those of you that make it to the next step:yeah:.

@sr919 - I'm very sorry to hear that and wish you the best of luck with your future endeavors. i was actually wondering if you indicated the cardiothoracic unit as your unit of choice? my classmate also heard from USC today- and told me that they sent her an email saying that they aren't hiring any students for the cardiothoracic unit in particular...which is a shame. but i guess that's expected when they're only accepting 10 students for the program? :( i just wish we were aware of this information beforehand.

@sr919 I'm very sorry to hear that too :( I haven't heard yet but I know that it is highly likely that I am in the same boat. With only 10 positions open for 400+ applicants--that means many of us will be receiving those kinds of emails. Even the "best of the best" may not find a place among the 10, there are just too few available positions :(. And like the other user commented, it may have a lot to do with what unit you applied for--some may be hiring 1 or 2, and others none at all. Just remember you're not alone...and keep trying :nurse:

Thanks for those encouraging words VanessaRN, I needed to hear that as I too received my e-mail rejection today. But like you said, I just have to keep trying.

I also got the rejection e-mail today. I applied to the L &D and Postpartum...which USC doesnt have any. Time to move on. Best of luck to the rest of us.

@nomoreschool it's really tough receiving bad news, especially if it's been piling up one after another. i'm really sorry that things didn't work out with usc this time around. have you looked into children's hospital los angeles (chla)? i believe they are the "equivalent" to usc for kids/l&d/etc. i haven't looked into it so much because peds/ob isn't really my focus, but they also offer a versant new grad program. in fact, they are the founders of the program.

according to their website, the november cohort is full (well duh, it's already december) but their next cohort is scheduled for september 2011. it's really unfortunate that they cancelled their march 2011 cohort, since next sept seems like a very long time. but it's an option. applications will be posted in april 2011 if you're still looking and interested by that time. the website is here: http://www.chla.org/site/c.ipinktoajsg/b.3579535/k.8e69/rn_residency.htm .

good luck in continuing the job search! i know this is a really tough time, but if anything, use it to your advantage--every experience, whether good or bad, offers something to learn and grow from. :nurse:
