Does anyone know what unit secretaries make? I called gateway and they said alot of nursing students that are waiting to get into the program are taking this course to get into the hosp. and work. Sounds like a cool job, but I may be misinformed...:icon_roll Seems like I should get a a job in a hospital first and see if nursing is really what I want to do!

Not sure what the job is like but if Banner has any openings you can call their recruiters, give them the job ID number listed and get a salary range to give you an idea what they start out with and most hospitals pay start about the same. Also Maricopa County hospital I believe lists their rate of pay for most positions on their website. HTH
Good Luck!

I'm a unit secretary/monitor tech at a different hospital in North Phoenix - starting salary for this job is about $11.50/hour.
I'm starting at Banner as a monitor tech (only) next week and start there at $12/hour.

Last I heard, on-call HUCs at Scottsdale Healthcare make $13/hr and the on-call HUCs at Banner make $14/hr.
I was a regular HUC at SHC and with 3 years previous non-HUC experience I was making $12.40/hr.
Good luck!

Hi Sassiebaz!
It's so funny we are so in the same boat with everything!! I just got hired through Banner as a Unit Secretary. I took their certificate program a few years back and have done the job before. They told me that the salary starts at 11.10 an hour and goes up to 19.50 depending on experience. Like I said, I have done this job before and I love it. I think it's great introductory to health care. Working this job is what made me decide I wanted to be a nurse. Please PM me if you have any questions!!

I don't know how it compares to your area of the country, but as a Unit Secretary here in Rochester, NY I make about the same wage as the PCT's or CNA's in the same facility.
I also work as a PCT, and both jobs have their pluses and minuses...
As a unit sec. I don't have to do patient care (ie - I don't need a shower immediately after my shift), but the job can be boring at times and stressful at other times. As a tech, I get to do patient care, so the job is much more interesting and I learn more by far, but it takes more energy out of me and can sometimes be pretty gross.

I was a unit secretary for 12 years, taught a Health Unit Coordinator program for two years, went back to work as a float pool secretary at Banner while I go to school for my RN, and only make $14 an hour, and that's with NAHUC certification. I loved my job, but the money isn't that great.
