UC Davis RN residency program Summer/Fall 2016

Hi there! Congrats on getting offered a position! I am planning to apply to the next New Grad RN program for 2017. I'm applying in November and I was wondering if you could share some of your qualifications/experience? I did my preceptorship in L&D, I have a year of volunteer experience in L&D, I was a CNA for 5 years, I have my AWHONN affiliation and am certified in ACLS, BLS, NRP, and ECG Monitoring. I know UC davis has a very competitive program and I would honestly be happy on any unit (it doesn't have to be L&D). Any advice for someone going through the process? Hi RaeHere! I strongly recommend the UCD OR Training Program. I believe it is the only OR Training Program around the Sacramento area that trains their nurses how to scrub & circulate extensively (8 months in total). I feel very supported and learn something new every day. The patient population is diverse and the surgeries are challenging, cutting edge, downright amazing considering it is a Level I Trauma Center.

As a New Grad nurse in a specialty, I face both typical new grad emotions and concerns, but also the reality that my training is different from what nursing school taught me. However, the program's educator is outstanding! The program is well structured and allows the opportunity to train in multiple services (ENT, Ortho Trauma, Burn, Plastics, GI, Urology, etc). Most of the staff are understanding, knowledgeable, and love their jobs. They have been very receptive of trainees. Some surgeons can be nasty but most of them understand that the OR is a team driven environment, and therefore respect the members of their teams. Of course, no facility is perfect and there are many improvements that can be made.

Pros:

-In the program, you rotate through services every 4 weeks. This provides the opportunity to see many different cases.

-The Educator & Staff

-Circulating AND scrubbing!

Cons:

-In the program, you rotate through every service every 4 weeks, that's not a lot of time to solidify your practice in a single service.

-Some people seem to think OR nurses are not real nurses (HA!) There is *sometimes* tension between the perioperative services.

-Some nurses really do eat their young!

From what I've heard, the training program should be hiring soon. They seem to hire a new cohort about every six months. I started in August so that means a new cohort should start in February/March. I suggest checking back in with HR around late Dec/January.

PS It seems that having experience related to the OR is a good way to get your app through HR. Good luck!
