It depends on the program. I'm in an online program that has taken me almost 2 years to complete, but only because I did not take as many classes as I could have. I know some who have done it in a year or year and a half.
In terms of cost, it depends on where you go. I went to a public institution and was fortunate enough that my job covered all of the tuition costs.

There's no "typical" cost -- there is a wide range of possible costs, depending on the specific program. I went to a B&M state university program; I don't recall the exact price (this was a long time ago), but I do know that it was inexpensive enough that I could easily pay out of pocket as I went (while working full-time). I was able to complete my program in one academic year because I had a couple year of college previously (unrelated to nursing, but that met many of the general ed requirements). Other people in my cohort took a lot longer because they had to take a lot of general ed courses.

I did Indiana University's online ASN-BSN transition class, part time, in 4 semesters (no co-reqs needed d/t my previous BA), and it was about $12k.
The website for the state uni at which I completed my BSN many years ago says that the BSN completion program, which is now entirely on-line (it was a B&M program when I attended, but that was a v. long time ago) costs, total (inc. books, fees, etc.), ~$6k. It's worth shopping around.

Online University | Accredited Online College Degrees | WGU is 100% online. 'Average' student take 2-3 terms to complete at $3200/ term. But you CAN accelerate and do it faster, thus saving money as their tuition is flat rate. Oh, that also includes books!
I did it in one term so my RN-to-BSN cost me just the $3200.
