Test without any use?

Published

Hello everyone,

I was accepted into the nursing program for my school. I will start on Ausgust 17, 2009. I recived my information packet in the mail. I read in my packet that I will have to take a $266.00 test called a "TEAS" teast. They wrote that this test does not effect my GPA or my status in the program.:uhoh3: So my question is besides someone making $266.00 on it why do I need to take it? :banghead: Your input would be welcome!

$266.00 . . . really?? I took the TEAS and it was only $45.00 at a CSU . .that is so strange. What school do u go to? I've heard that many nursing schools are working on incorporating the test into their entrance requirements, and many CCs make their accepted nursing class pass the test before final admission to the program. So im thinking maybe your class are like the guinea pigs - they're just trying it out to see how you do maybe?? But geez, $266 dollars? Thats pretty steep!

I would ask someone at the nursing school personally. I wonder if it could be being used as a benchmark...to document your classes knowledge before starting so they can compare that at different stages of nursing school?

I think I paid $40 to take the test at my school. My school uses it as a requirement before even being able to submit an application to the program as they use the ranking as another way to screen through the applicants. $266?!?!? I agree with the pp in that you should speak with someone in person about that.

Yep. Thats what my school did with the HESI.

the teas (test of essential academic skills) gives the school an idea of how much math, reading, english and science you know. the company can give them a statistical report on how well they think you will do in their nursing program based on how you do on this exam. ati, the company that writes this exam, also writes nursing exams that some schools have their students take before they will allow them to graduate.

http://www.atitesting.com/default.aspx- the home page of the organization that writes and administrates this test. the test covers four general areas: math, reading, english and science.

  • math covers whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions, decimals, algebraic equations, percentages, and ratio/proportion
  • reading covers paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions
  • english covers knowledge of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words and spelling
  • science covers science reasoning, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, basic physical principles and general science

I had to take the NET (Nursing Entrance Test) before I started NS, but it wasn't anywhere close to $266!! That seems like a ridiculous extra cost to me. Everything is so expensive your first semester to begin with!! I would contact your school and get some more details.

$266??? I paid $40 a little over a year ago and thought that was too much. I already had a four year degree and couldn't believe that I had to take a test on the basics to show I was capable of doing college level work ---- again.

Are you sure it's the TEAS test? It sounds like the school may utilize ATI testing thorughout your program, meaning after you finish each block you are tested on the content for that semester utilizing NCLEX test like scenario questions. The fee sounds like it covers all the books and study guide that go along with the ATI program. Best to check with your school to make sure and clarify

Now that I think about it -- this poster may be onto something because that's around what we had to pay for our ATI testing materials for the course. Hope you're able to solve your mystery. I'm curious to the large pricetag.

wow i had to take the Teas before I was accepted into my program. We took this test for FREE and I never heard of people getting charged for it .I cant beleive you have to pay that much money to take the test. Some schools accept results from other schools because the results are also available online for the school and student(my friend used her TEAS test results when she took it at another school when she applied to my school and the school accepted it). Maybe you can test somewhere els.

DANG! Wonder how much of that is going to your school! I had to take the NET ( which was a ridiculous test ) and it was something like 40 bucks max.
