Taking the test for the 6th time next week and have a question?

Published

Hi there all.....Yes, it will be the 6th and final time, cause I WILL pass this time, no ifs and of buts.... :coollook: One question....On those internal disaster questions, where it happens in a building (like twin towers) and they ask you who would you assess first.....should you help the most tramatized person first(airway) or the least hurt(walking wounded) first.....from how I am interperting this article it says help the least hurt first so they can help you....Please clarify this for me....if anyone can....thanks.....also, I have found a great nclex herb meds article...pm me if you would like me to send it to you.....Please say prayers for me for next week....and to Suzanne...thanks for all the info and helpful hints....

here is the article I am refering to....

I will be taking NCLEX soon as well. From what I understand is that you save the least critical patient first in a natural disaster situation. I coud be wrong though. I wish someone could post a sample so we could discuss it. I wish you the very best of luck. I will be pulling for you.

You save the least critical first, because they have the best chance at a safe exit. This is true for the fire in hospital and all other internal disaster questions.

One of the ONLY kinds of questions that you do not put "airway" as a first priority........I repeat.... ONLY .

Remember...... save the ones who need the least amount of assistance first, they will take the least amount of time to get to safety, and they will also be able to help you. GOOD LUCK!!!!

I would answer this according to how it is done in EMS. Walking wounded are left for last. Those who have airway problems that can be handled easily (such as repositioning, opening airway) would be first. Airway problems that are advanced, such as not breathing or needing help with breathing would be tagged black and not treated. Here is a website that talks about the START method of triage.

I don't think they taught me at all triage and disasters in nursing classes. I might have had one question on it, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Good luck on your test.....

For disaster/triage think: provide the greatest good for the greatest amount of people.

Save in order:

Red-airway problems or pts that are in a life-threatening situation that have the highest possibility of survival.

yellow: "walking wounded" ex, minor burns to legs or possible fx

green: lacerations, child crying, psychsocial

black: least possibility of survival, see last and will be your last priority.

The whole purpose of disaster triage is to save the largest number of people, so you would be going from good to bad. You try to see who can walk away from the scene, and possibly even help you...............

These are considered the green, the ones with sprained ankles, cuts to extremities, face, etc.

Next are the yellow, followed by the red. Patients that are in a code situation are not treated at this point, as too many would be needed to try to help them, and it is more important to save the largest number.

What you are describing as yellow are actually considered green in disaster triage. Life-threatening red are not going to be handled first, after green, yellow will be tagged next as they have the greater chance of survival.

Please read the article that is posted above. It will be quite beneficial to you.

wow...i got this information right out of the Kaplan course book

Look a the article posted above, that has the complete and correct information. That is the information that all of my students used to pass NCLEX the first time. :)

Think, yellow needs transporting to a facility, walking wounded may not. :)

Good luck!!!!!!!! I really hope you pass! You have the right attitude and perservance to pass!
