can't take any prereqs- frustrated

Published

I'm currently enrolled in the liberal arts school of my university (I didn't know I was going into nursing until this semester) and I'm extremely frustrated because my school is not letting me take any of the prereqs I need. A&P and Microbiology is not open to me because I'm not in the nursing program and when I asked for special permission I've been waitlisted twice...and I can't take chem or statistics because precalculus is a prereq and I'm failing precalculus because they made it unnecessarily difficult at my school...and I don't know what to do....my gpa is dropping and I feel like I'm just wasting time and money at school

any advice?

Can you transfer to another school? To me, that would be an option to look at if you want to go into nursing soon. There's no use in waiting around taking unnecessary classes. Look around to other schools, see what they say about you taking pre-reqs for nursing, and maybe retake the pre-cal at another school to boost your GPA (if they allow it). Some schools don't require any math classes before you take chemistry, and at my school we only have to take basic college algebra. That's all.

I would first look into another college. At most colleges sciences courses are offered to all students regardless of your program. The nursing program itself is usually hard to get into and lots of people get wait listed or have to reapply numerous times. Good luck.

I agree, look at another school. I transferred out of a 4 year school into a community college just to do pre reqs. My first university did not have enough sections so I couldn't get into the classes I needed. Community college is much cheaper too

Do they have nursing there? Your major probably needs to be declared as Pre-Nursing in order to take those classes because it was the same thing for me.

Change your major or transfer. You could also try putting in a transient request to a nearby school that will allow you to take some of the classes. The school I am currently attending requires general biology as a pre-req for A&P, so I am transferring this summer to the school that has the nursing program and they are allowing me to take A&P without the pre-req. I am not against gen bio, but I just felt like it was a waste of money and time since it won't be needed to get into nursing school.

I had to move Hell and Earth to get into prerequisite classes. The first few semesters I tried, I had to wait for a spot by wait listing and that didn't work because I had no class registration priority. It was not my major and I was a new student. So I never got in those classes. Then summer came and I enrolled at a local university "extension" program that opened classes normally intended for enrolled students there, but let non-enrolled students register and add if there was space. I waited several days for spots to open up by attending the classes and finally got a seat when people dropped because they realized they didn't want that class. Luckily, A&P and other heavy duty classes are not as full during summer sessions. Then fall semester came and I had to try to get the rest of my classes done at community college. I wait listed at 3 different schools until I got a spot! I basically had to go to all the classes for the first 2-3 days until a spot opened up. Some classes physically did not have the space to hold students wanting to add, so dozens of us waited in the hall ways for the entire duration of the class time--just eaves-dropping and hoping for our big chance to get our add card signed. I ended up having to split my semester between 2 different schools. In the end, it was a pain in the butt getting in these classes, but it was worth it. It is possible, you just have to explore all your options, and utilize all your opportunities. Such as other schools. Good luck.
