My husband was offered a job in a different state. I will be finished with my second semester of an ADN program. Is it possible for me to switch to a school in the new state to finish my last two semesters? I have OB, Peds, MedSurg 2 and a preceptorship left to complete in my current program. Could I even transfer into a BSN program instead? I have most of my GenEd requirements completed for a 4 year degree anyway. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. It's a big move -- from Nevada to NYC! Thank you!

Not usually unfortunately. Each school runs it's sequence of nursing classes differently so they usually don't accept nursing course credits earned at another school. You'll have to start over from the very beginning.

Yes, it's notoriously difficult to get nursing credits to transfer from one program to another. If possible, could you stay where you are & live with family or friends to finish out the ADN program?
Yes I can stay here and live with my parents. It's one of the options we are considering but the thought of living apart for most of the year is bothersome to the both of us. We are trying to avoid it but it may be the best option.
I know this must be a very hard decision to make The hassle of trying to enroll in a new school, possibly having to deal with waiting lists, starting the program over again...either decision is going to be rough. Good luck with whatever you decide to do :)

I have to agree with nurse2bekimberly, try to stay where you are and finish out the program. It will certainly be difficult for the remainder of the program, but after you're finished you'll be able to move up to NYC and start looking for a job without having to set yourself back education wise.

I have the same sort of issue and started applying to schools in the state I will be living -- and like someone else said, the likelihood of the new school accepting your credit hours is slim to none. They liked NONE of my pre-requis' and run a nursing program completely differently. And your grades have to be TOP notch before they will even LOOK at your transcript. So send your transcript and begin the process asap. And expect to repeat almost everything. Weigh the pro's and con's and in my case, I'm a lonely lady without my husband because I have three more semesters to go in NY and would have FIVE in another state!!!

Just finish where you are. All states have different curricula for nursing.
