Student Nurse

Is there an area where male nurses are needed the most?

Featured Replies

Same places female nurses are needed.

I would personally love to see more male nurses in OB. There are none at my job. It would be nice it there though. I also agree with the PP. Male nurses are needed everywhere.

Male nurses are just nurses. Don't ever call a nurse who is a man a 'male nurse.' I'm a nurse, and I'm a man, but I'm not a male nurse. Professionally, I am no different than my female colleagues. I may bring differences into my job d/t my personality, but that can be with anyone. Females have different personalities than other females, and vice versa.

Indeed, we're nurses, not "male" nurses. Our ability and role shouldn't be defined by our gender just as we quite rightly don't refer to female medical professionals as lady doctors.

Here in the UK men tend to gravitate to a lot of the "high tech" areas, such as critical care, operating theatres, emergency nursing. We don't have OB as a speciality here, we have midwives which are seen as a separate group from nurses. Men have started going into that as a career, but there's probably only a handful of them compared to men on the nursing register. All I can do is echo what SionainnRN has said. Don't go looking for an area of practice where you think men are needed, find an area of practice you enjoy and get excited about. Employers notice this and you'll be happier as well.

It would be nice to have more male nurses in the NICU. Waaaaaayy too much estrogen there.

Why? Why does their gender have any effect on their ability to do their job? Nursing should be a genderless role.

It doesn't. Did I say that? No. Chill.

It would just be nice to have a balance. Out of our 200+ staff in the unit, we have 5 male, including myself. It would be nice to get some men in there. And, it's been said that some Nicu parents prefer a male nurse, so the father can better connect. No that is not invariably set in stone. I enjoy a more even ratio.

I'll echo that. When I went through my OB rotation, there was one male nurse on the entire floor and that was in NICU. NICU is a really awesome field!
