Hi,

Just curious.

Were any of you current school nurses able to start your jobs at the school during the year? Or do they generally only hire for the start of the school year?

Specializes in School nursing.

I started my job (sorta) in May of last year. They had hired me for one position (7-12), but the 5th and 6th grade had to leave before the end of the school year and I was available. So I worked that position in a abbreviated contract until the next school year. It does happen.

When I was first hired for the district I was the "flex nurse" basically a FT sub - traveled all over the district wherever I was needed if a nurse was out. I started in October for that position. I finally got my own school in the middle of my second year as a school nurse. One of the elementary school nurses decided in February she was moving on to something else, she called me to let me know of her plans and I let my supervisor know I wanted my own place, met with the principal and was offered the job immediatly.

I was hired in November a few years back. I guess it just depends when there is turnover.

I was hired full time in Dec after subbing at the same school for over 2 months. Subbed all last school year, my first year subbing at schools.

Specializes in School Nursing, Public Health Nurse.

With my current District I was hired at the beginning of June last year when their last Nurse turned in her resignation letter. With my position before that I was hired at the beginning of February to replace a Nurse that was leaving and she was hired that November. They had a hard time finding a Nurse and didn't have one from August until that Nurse started.
