StaRN residency programs in Florid

Published

I have been applying to several of the HCA StaRN programs in Florida and was contacted by 2 different recruiters, one for the west florida hospitals and the other for Ocala Regional Medical Center. I was so excited after waiting so long, but now I'm wondering if this is something that I will be able to do since I will have to move from MD and will be living on my own. The Ocala Regional recruiter's email said that the first 13 weeks are classroom and training and you will only be paid 15$/hr. After that you will get hired for a position in the hospital and receive the regular RN pay which is in the 20-25 $ / range. I was very surprised to hear this and am worried that I won't be able to afford to rent an apartment at 15$/hr. The other recruiter didn't mention this lower pay, but requires a recorded webcam interview which guess is a screening an first part of the interview process. I have to get back to them rather quickly, so if anyone has any information on either of these I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

I was also contacted by a recruiter for the West Florida program, but at $15/hr ...no thanks. There are better new grad programs that start you at 20+ from the start.

Do you know if all of the StaRN programs are like that? What other programs would you recommend? I have also completed the recruiter interview for Florida Hospital and it's in the preliminary review period. I know they start you out in the 20s to start but require a 2 yr contract as well, but at least you get payed as an RN from the beginning. I am limited somewhat since I don't have a BSN. I have a BA in psych and an ADN. I plan to go on, but this eliminates me from some places.

I am looking in to Tampa General's new grad program. It's a one year commitment + about 4 weeks of orientation and the starting pay is $23.07. Memorial Hospital in Tampa has a StaRN program. I read their website the other day and I want to say they start out around $22/hr from the start (check their website to be sure). From my research, not all hospitals with StaRN programs start out in the $15-$16 range, but some do, and I am avoiding those. My classmates who are doing the programs at Tampa General and Florida Hospital Orlando are loving it so far. I wish I would've applied sooner. Hoping for a call back this week. I'm hearing so many amazing things about TGH. Such great training for new nurses. Gosh, I would be ecstatic if they selected me! Sarasota has a program, I think. Other than those two Tampa hospitals, Florida Hosp Orlando, and West Florida in Pensacola, I haven't researched any more FL programs. I did not pay attention to whether or not having a BSN was a requirement.

*fingers crossed for TGH*

Thanks for your input! That's good to hear that not all StaRN programs pay so little during the training period. The email I got from the west Florida staRN didn't specifically say which hospital I'm being considered for, but there are several hospitals that are in that group. I just have to hope I can do a decent job with the webcam interview! Not too thrilled about the idea...kind of creepy to me, but whatever it takes I guess! I hope you hear from Tampa General this week! Unfortunately, they require a BSN for their residency program, so that eliminates me, but I'm hoping to hear from Florida hospital soon. I'm so ready to get started on my nursing career and be done with all of this job searching, applications, interviews, etc...!

Look into florida hospital residency programs. I interviewed at both the orlando and tampa locations and decided on the tampa location. I started off at $24 and some change an hour. Plus night shift and weekend dif. No BSN required although your base is slightly higher.

Congratulations on getting hired! That is great to hear about Florida Hospital because I had a preliminary phone interview with the recruiter for the Orlando area hospitals. I sent in all my references, transcripts, etc...She said she'd send my info to the hiring managers, so I am praying that I will hear something this week! I can't remember if I applied to the Tampa locations, but I'm going to look at it again and apply if I didn't. I actually went to Eckerd College for Psychology, quite a while ago and loved the Tampa/St. Pete area! What unit will you be working on or are you already working there?

I work on the progressive care unit! It's a great floor to get experience on!

Well, I just found the post for the new grad position at FL hospital Tampa and applied! I also applied for an oncology unit since I'm interested in that area, but don't know if they would consider a new grad for a regular RN position. I didn't realize there were separate applications for the hospitals outside of Orlando...It's pretty overwhelming trying to figure out where to apply, but hopefully, someone will want me!

im sending you a PM

Can I be in on that PM too? I am also applying to FH Tampa.

sure you can. but i dont have any connections in the tampa area yet. just one hospital in gainesville. if your open to it let me know.
