staffing agencies

I cannot begin to address the good or bad aspects of staffing agencies in and around the Charleston area, but why would you want to place yourself in such a difficult situation as working for an agency without experience? I am not even sure an agency would consider you for employment without at least 6 months of working experience. Have you considered some sort of part time work with a facility? I really do not mean to be negative, but I am concerned you will not fully be able to meet the demands of the job and the expectations of the facility and the agency without some orientation. As you are planning on furthering your standing in the nursing field, it would not be good for your future to have negative issues with your work, or even license standing for lack of experience in a job where most of the time the nurse is expected to be able to hit the floor running. Good luck and please speak to a trusted instructor or advisor before doing this type of work.

Thanks for the heads up. I have been contacted by several staffing agencies since I posted my resume on monster. They are aware that I dont have experience (except school clinicals) and still want to hire me. They said I could work in long term care. I had a bad feeling about it and you definitly reassured me. Thanks!

Just wanted to wish you good luck once again. Thanks for understanding I do not want you to have unnecessary bad experiences just starting out in nursing. Believe me, we can all have shifts that cause nightmares. These staffing agencies are in the business to make money. They do fill a need, but the bottom line is money. Many of the agencies pay top $ for the nurses and you can schedule yourself to your own liking. One of the top priorities of staff nurses is that they can walk into any facility, hospital or Drs. office and deal with any situation presented to them. Some agencies will give you tests to judge your level of skill. You may be better off taking a P.R.N. position for just one job. LTC may not be you first choice, but it will give you that "first year" of experience you will need.
