The help with maintaining blood return from the feet up the legs in patients with DVT risk, or post surgical patients that aren't up walking yet.

They increase venous return in a patient with limited mobility. They are a less invasive way than giving medications to prevent blood clots in the legs while a patient is in the hospital

The long version is that the arterial system is elastic, and propels blood around the body. The venous system has no such ability. In the upper part of the body, gravity helps the blood return to the heart from the veins, in the legs, it is the movement of the muscles that push against the veins and thereby get blood back to the heart.
The sequential teds help in those with limited mobilty by pushing the venous blood upward and thereby decreasing the chance of a clot forming in the lower extremities.
Always good to tell patients who aren't very mobile to stretch and tense their legs often to assist with blood flow.
