sp catheter

I have been told by adon that sp catheters must be irrigated q shift. I have never heard this before and have never irrigated a sp cath unless it was occluded or had a lot of sediment. Is this a new practice ? Wouldn't frequent irrigations increase risk of infection ?

What do you all think?

Is there a doctor's order for that? You shouldn't irrigate the catheter unless you have an order to do so. Are there any indications for irrigation? Clotting? Bleeding? No output?

No . No orders and no indications as far as I can see.

This seems wrong to me but I was wondering if there is some new info I am unaware of.

This is one of those things that you need to look at your facilities p&p. Is there a standing order that has been over looked? Is there any notation from MD? Does pt have problems with output?
