Hello Nurses,
Is anyone out there working in a facility where the new management model has the Social Worker as the Unit Manager?
If so, how is it working for you?

The place that I used to work at, the people who did not have a nursing degree often played a management role..Their titles were: Chief Director, Medical Records Director, Social Worker, etc..They were not nurses but handled the situation well..

How about this one..... Recreational Therapist as a unit manager?
Plain and simple...... It won't work out!
Usually the people who manage a place dont need a nursing degree..The director who did not have a nursing degree had a managment degree..She did the hiring at the LTC facility and supervised during the day and night shift..If the director needed clarification about nursing duties, she would probably would take the advice of a nurse or MD..I think that could go for everyone managing a place to be sucessful.
At the place I worked at, I know during the weekends where there were no senior nurses or directors, usually the department heads who were not nurses ran the place..To sum it up, if a nurse can do her or his job, then management does not need to be there to supervise..

I've experienced this and it wasn't great. The Social Worker only saw the social work side of the issues. Had absolutely no idea of why the nurses did the things the way we do. The family was always right and the nurses were always wrong.
The SocialWorker/Director was cheaper than an RN/Director.
She's still there and all the experienced nurses have bailed.
