SIgh.......

It never ceases to amaze me that hospitals want top notch patient oriented care, work your butt off, who cares if you are on overtime and up to 50 hourse BEFORE clocking in that night, have 7 patients but they expect you to rotate shifts???

I worked 2 days shifts this week, then got called in on a night shift. I mean this is the standard around here. EVerybody does it, they all work at least 1/2 and 1/2 of both shifts. I think its crazy to expect a day person to stay awake all night and function WELL, and vice versa a night person to stay up all day and function well. Is it just me??? I mean what other profession expects and demands you to work any and all hours???????

Not too many that I can think of....Sigh.

What amazes me is why we put up with it. One thing about nurses that I think can make us our own worst enemy is that we don't seem to be able to come together and insist on changes. Every nurse may hate it but instead of banding together and saying "NO" we just go along with things and then b***h about them to each other. I realize it wouldn't be easy but don't you think we could make some changes if we stood together?? Or is that being too idealistic??

I'm confused. Is your schedule made out like this? Or did you allow them to call you in when they were short staffed. Were you on call?

Our OR and Endo staff has to do on call on nights and weekends. Many get called in at night and then have to continue to stay and work day shifts. Not sure if there's any better way.

My first job was a rotating two week schedule. Two weeks of days and two weeks of nights or evenings. When I started there was no permanent night shift position open, which sounds weird but true, and I would beg other rotators to take their night shifts rotations. I hate rotating.

Good luck.

No, i was on call, actually since the census was down that day. I was scheduled to work, then put on call due to low census, then called in.

I agree its insane. EVERYONE on EVERY unit except out patient services does this. For instance, my DH's schedule is this. He worked W-TH-F day shift (12's). Then he's off, works Thurs day shift, Friday and Saturday night shift. Scheduled this way, and its usually worse than this layout. It BLOWS. They say its "temporary" til they hire more help for each shift but the truth is its been "temporary" for over 5 years now. And they want to achieve Magnet status this way!?!?!?
