Should I go for the interview??

I applied for a position in a private group home for developmentally disabled persons. The position was advertised as "work 24 hours (9AM to 9Pm) every weekend get paid for 36 hours". When I was called for the interview the HR person volunteered that they never had that pay tho the hours were correct. I keep thinking that they advertised the position that way to attract nurses. The job is over 1 hour travel (1 way), I had thought to spend Saturday night at a motel so I didn't have to travel so far home and back in the morning. These hours would be perfect for me as I am going to college for my RN and I would be free Mon - Fri for classes, clinicals and homework. I'm sure it wouldn't be worth it for me to interview as the pay is the same as I'm currently making, and the distance much farther. they want me to come in for an interview, should I go to see what they are offering or walk away from a company that I feel was deceptive in advertising the position?

I am a little confused. Did the add have a specific pay listed and the HR rep said no that is not right? I work in DD/MR and love it (day program not group home), it is challenging and not for everyone, but if you have the heart and patience I say go for it. If you are working 24 hours and getting paid 36 that is 12 hours free pay that you are not getting now. You say it is same rate of pay that you are making now. If the commute is one hour each way think of it that they are paying you to drive to and from and then you still are getting 10 hours of free pay.

Also how did they advertise that kind of pay? ultimately it is up to you, you also have to factor in drive time, and if you get a hotel room you can kiss 50-150 bucks from your pay each week, 200-600 a month. Now if they have certain overtime laws there like in alaska any time worked over 8 in a day is overtime. So if it was 24 hour shift in alaska that would actually be triple time for the last 8 hours. Im just throwing a lot of info at you. Hope it helps

hmm tough call, if it was me given the information you have provided I would not take this new job because of the commute time and another associated costs.

Group homes can be a fantastic place to work, IF they are well run and put the clients and safety issues first.

I would suggest that you find out who the government dept. is that is responsible for overseeing group homes is and double check to ensure that past surveys did not find any issues. Also, I'd check to see if there have been any complaints against filed against this company and if they were substantiated. In Indiana, it's the State Dept. of Health, but I'm guessing this probably varies in different states.

The group home company I worked for several years ago offerred a pay scale similar to what you saw in the ad, it was $100 bonus for each weekend worked in addition to the hourly wage. So, at the time, this bonus was almost equal to an extra 12 hours pay.

Maybe the HR rep you spoke with wasn't aware of what the correct rate was. If you are truly interested in this position, maybe it would be worth it to call back and talk to the HR manager or the Group Home Manager or Director.

Do you currently work 24 hours and get paid for 36? If not, then I think the job would be worth it. Making the same hourly rate, but getting paid for 12 hours that you aren't working (and could therefore be studying) sounds wonderful!

She is saying that they advertised they were paying for 36 hours, but then the HR person said that wasnt correct, that they were only paying for 24. It sounds to me like a waste of time to go to this interview if the pay is the same and you have to make a long commute and spend extra money on gas. I would call HR back and tell them I was interested in the ADVERTISED position and pay, and since this is not the case, I will not be coming to interview.

I understood it to mean that the hourly rate they advertised was wrong, not the getting paid for 36 hours. I'm totallly lost now. Good luck to Op in whatever decision you make.

If the ad was falsely misleading in any way I'm not sure I could trust them with anything else. Be careful.:twocents:
