Shopping for Fall 08

Anyone else gone shopping or just checked things out yet?

I went and tried stuff on last week and think I have almost decided what I want but haven't found the ones yet.

I tried on Cheerokee cargo pants but they only had 3 pockets (not really cargo to me) and had a draw string waist. I would prefer more pockets (like 7) and elastic and a draw string. I can just see me walking down the hall and my pants falling down to my ankles...lol, talk about putting someone in shock.

I want a v-neck top for sure or I will be taking scissors to it. My only problem is deciding how many pockets and where they are....I want as many pockets as possible but I don't know if I want them at the front hem or not. (I heard they would make you feel weighted down)

I had thought I was going to get Dansko shoes but I tried on Spring Steps the other day and they were so comfy so I might switch to those but I haven't made a final decision on anything yet.

I want a Littman Cardiology III steth or a Master Cardio, just waiting for orientation to make sure there are not any restrictions or etc. Of course with a special color, still deciding and lots of personalization.

Anyone else been buying or just looking? What have you decided on getting or are thinking about getting?

Must have posted in the wrong forum.....

it's almost 5 months until we actually start clinicals, so i'm not so much in a rush to purchase scrubs right now. i'm waiting for orientation to find out what we can wear and which colors are required. i don't know if we have to wear a special scrub top/pant. i really like the flare bottom scrub pants, but i don't know if we have to wear cargo pants or not. do we have to buy the school patches and have them sewn on our scrub tops and jackets, or do we purchase the tops with the patch already on them? i just don't want to have to return or exchange any items. i'm nervous to get everything out of the way as well, but i think i'll wait until june or july before i purchase my scrubs. my cousin already gave me a stethoscope as a gift. i paid for my background check and drug screen already. i think i'm squared away with my immunizations. i just need to get my physical done.

I've been wanting to go shopping for school. My program (accelerated) starts in May and we'll begin clinicals in June. I have heard great things about Danskos but haven't been able to try them on. I think I'll go looking for everything once I get paid in a few weeks. I know I'll be even more excited when I get my steth. (which I'm planning to get engraved :D)! I also can't wait for my nursing bag, scrubs, or even school supplies in general!!

I don't start until fall but I have been checking things out instead of waiting until the last minute.

I like to plan ahead and since I know what the requirements are for our scrubs, shoes and stethoscope, I might as well start trying on different things before I have to choose one.

There are so many different brands and designs out there that I want to check out all of the options and by starting now I am able to take my time and get the best option for me.

I also found a z-coil store but they were closed when I went by so I am going to go back another day and check them out too. I still have to try on the Dansko's to see how they fit. I have heard a lot about Nike Shox but heard it is hard to find them to meet the requirements that we have.

Anyway, thanks and good luck premedturnednursing!

Thanks, and good luck to you! That is a great idea, to go and try on the scrubs and find what fit I like best. I might try to do that this weekend! And I had forgotten about z coils. I've heard they are really good too. Looks like I've got some shopping to do!

since you didn't say, i'm just guessing by your location that you are going to ut-houston in the fall?

if this is the case, the scrubs are navy blue. but i'd wait until after orientation to buy your scrubs and lab coats. many of the graduating seniors have donated their scrubs and lab coats and we will be selling them at orientation for like $10, i think. granted, our supply is limited, but if you can find some scrubs in your size, have at it! otherwise, navy blue scrubs. there aren't any restrictions on cargo pants vs. flare; it's all personal preference. i would recommend that you get a scrub top with pockets in the front (not the breast pocket, but the ones down by bottom of the shirt). trust me, you'll wish you had those. also, you will need a stethoscope (no restrictions there, just one you like and can use; mine is neon green), pen light, and bandage scissors. and yes, you have to buy a patch for your scrub tops and lab coats at the bookstore. but i think they have some that are pre-sewn.

oh, and unless you just really want to buy your books online or have some amazing coupon at amazon.com or something, buy your books from the book store. the book store works hard to keep prices low and competative to online stores. besides, with shipping and handling, you usually negate what savings you get online.

anything else you need to know, just ask me.

I'm starting the bacc2 program at UT Houston in a couple of weeks. I've been gathering supplies. I ordered my engraved Littman Master Cardiology from allheart.com as they were the lowest price I could find. I realize it is probably above and beyond what I need for school but as long as I don't lose it I see it as an investment. Although, after I ordered the master I realized that the cardio III might have been a better option since you just have to flip over the bottom part for peds or thin patients, where you have to has a seperate attachment with the master. I just got black since I knew it would be classic and I wouldn't get tired of the color. I ordered my scrubs from the same website. The Lando cargo flare pants fit weird because they are just drawstring with no elastsic so had an odd fit in the waist. I loved the dickies brand cargo flare pants with johnny collar 2 pocket scrub top. I also ordered a grey's anatomy brand labcoat on ebay for $10 that I should get anyday now. Now I just need to find some good shoes. From what I gather we need all white leather shoes with backs. I really wanted a nice pair of nursing clogs but I'm not sure if those would fly since they are mostly backless. Well good luck getting your stuff together!

PS: There is a specific forum on here for nursing gear that you might look

to get specific info on stethoscopes, scrubs, etc.

Shoes depend on your clinical instructor. For the most part, they're all pretty much okay with anything as long as the shoes are mostly white and aren't canvass. As far as clogs go, the only objections I've heard are that you can't have backless and can't have holes in the tops of the foot part. As long as you buy the kind with the little back strap and they don't have holes across the top, most of the UT clinical instructors don't care that much.

although i will not be attending ut in the fall, the information you have provided was extremely helpful. i'm going to be attending north harris college. thank you for your response.

Since I found out all of the restrictions, etc. for the program where I am attending.

So far, I have purchased a pair of Clark's, a pair of Dansko's, and I think I can wear a pair of Ryka's that I already have. I wanted to have several pairs to rotate around.

I have decided on a Littman Cardio III from Steeles.com as they will engrave the bell instead of the tubing which will rub off (from what I have heard). Everything else I want to purchase locally so I can get exactly what I want.

I have decided to buy my initial scrubs locally so that I can get the fit that I want.

Getting ready now to go and get my books for the summer classes I decided to take (not required for program).

Happy shopping all & good luck in NS!

The most comfy, favorite scrub pants I have tried to date are these Dickies:

http://www.jascouniform.com/ecom/showdetl.cfm?&Product_ID=18182&CATID=100&LogoObjectGroup_ID=1969

They have the elastic in the back but drawstring in the front, which I love, plenty of pockets, and I am a pretty petite girl so the petite sizes actually fit me which is a rare find for me! Unfortanately they don't carry them in the color I need for school. I'm in Kingwood's program. Not sure if North Harris has different colors or not, but we have to wear teal pants and white scrub tops with the patch on the left arm. Best of luck to you in your first semester!
