Shoes

Where is the best place, or rather, what are the best shoe options for working a 10 hour shift. I did a job shadow yesterday and after 5 hours I was exhausted and my back was in spasm. I wore sneakers with insoles, but I know that will not do it.

My PT mentioned I should use Crocs, which I bought, but the sizes are generic, and the med size fits but bothers one toe...will these stretch over time? Or, is there a sneaker that is best with a great arch support?

Thank you.

I work full-time on weekends doing 16-hour double shifts.

I love the imitation Crocs that I purchased at Target for $9.99 a pair. I also like Adidas and Avia walking shoes. Many nurses wear New Balance sneakers.

Dansko are the best. Forget the Croc's. or any generic version. Sure...they might be comfy for the first hour....or not. Worth the $$ spent for my dan's. I garden in the croc's...would never wear them to work.

On this website, I used to hear a lot of people raving about Z Coils. Many of the people said that it alleviated their back, hip, etc. pain. Haven't heard too much talk of them lately.

Anyone try one of these? If they do what they say they do I'd love to try them out, but for $200 a pair, I'd have to be sure that I have the job before I buy.

I did receive some words of wisdom about them, be careful around 02 and IV tubing as sometimes they can end up around the coil, and that wouldn't be good.

If anyone has some thoughts about Z Coils, I would really like to know. When we were in Durango, Colorado a few months ago, we passed a store that sold Z Coils. I wanted to get into the store and try on a pair, but we took too long at Mesa Verde and the shop was closed as we were driving back to our hotel.

I'd love any feedback about them. Thanks!

I love my Shox! Although I have to admit the longest that I have worked in them is 6 hours:)

One of my instructors told us not to buy Crocs because they don't protect your foot at all against wheelchairs rolling over your foot or needle sticks from dropped needles. I haven't bought any shoes yet...still looking.

Four words:

Birkenstocks or New Balances.

I wear the DANSKO....LOVE THEM...I tried the nurse mates several different stlyes but my back and feet lways hurt. Since i went to the DANSKO I have no foot or back pain.

I can wear the generic Crocs for the entirety of my 16-hour shifts with absolutely no foot or leg pain whatsoever. The OP asked about shoes, and I am merely stating what has worked out best for me.

I love my Dansko's. I have 2 pairs. I just bought some Crocs and plan to try them out at work Friday when I am only scheduled for four hours. Since it is such a short shift, I won't have to "suffer" too long if they aren't as comfy as most people claim they are. I trialed my Klogs on a four hour shift and absolutely hated them. I was so thankful I wasn't working 12 hours that day.

The Dansko's take a little getting used to walking in. They weren't really uncomfortable...just different...and a different way of walking. Once I got used to them, I loved them. Dansko's will always be my main work shoe, but I do like to change things up every once in a while and that is why I bought a pair of Crocs...they match some of my scrubs.
