Shift diff

Do you get paid time and a half for every hour after 8 hours worked? So 12 hour shifts always have 4 hours paid at time and one half?

Featured Replies

Yes. But some hospitals have higher base wages and do not have this practice.

Thanks for the reply!

Some hospitals yes. Some hospitals no. It just depends on the facility and the union contract (if there is one), etc.

It varies hospital to hospital. Some don't have differential, and some don't offer time and a half after 8 hours. I know several hospitals who just do 12s and those last 4 hours are not considered OT.

It does depend on the facility and since you are in CA the nurse contract the Union negotiated.

MOST facilities, however, do not pay 1 1/2 time for the last 4 hours. The federal law requires only that you are paid for over 40 hours/wk. U.S. Department of Labor - A Summary of Major DOL Laws
