Science in the Summer

Because this is a career change, the sciences are my only pre-reqs.

This summer, I plan to take

  1. A&P,
  2. A&P lab,
  3. Chem, and
  4. Chem lab.

The lectures are 12 weeks long and the labs are 5 weeks long.

I am on a time crunch. My goal is to start applying December this year, for programs starting next year.

What's your honest input?

Thanks.

I'm sorry, but what input are you looking for?

If you're looking for encouragement and tales of those who've done it before you - I say go for it.

I took A&P over the summer with a nutrition course and honestly, I found the condensed format to serve me well. It was easier to remember all the info come test time. Good luck!

Will these be at the same time, or back to back?

Back to back, I'd say go for it. At the same time, I would just do one at a time.

12 weeks shouldn't be so bad for both of those classes. Most Fall and Spring semesters are 16-17 weeks. I'm handling A&P, Microbiology, and Pharmacology at the same time this semester. It can be done.

AP I and Chem are both 12 weeks long during the summer. So, I'd be taking them at the same time.

12 weeks is a long summer semester. That's only 4 weeks shorter than a regular semester at my school. I say go for it! I took A&P 2 over the summer because it allowed me to apply to nursing school a semester earlier and I'm very happy I did. That was only 5 weeks long and I feel like I thrived in that class--I didn't have to balance A&P 2 with 4 other classes and work.

Good luck.

If you're applying in December, why not take one in the fall? Even if you are not 100 percent done with the second class, many programs accept some prereqs in progress. I would avoid two sciences in the summer, but it depends what your school is like. At mine, the labs are labor-intensive and almost like taking a second class, especially for A&P.

My chemistry is a pre-requisite to micro. So, if I take chem in the summer, I'll be able to take micro in the fall and be done in time to meet my December deadline. Otherwise, I'll have to push micro to spring...and be attending nursing school in 2016 rather than 2015.

I see what you mean now. I thought you just had the science prereqs mentioned in your original post. Good luck with whatever you decide. :-)

12 weeks is a long summer session. I think it's doable if you're not working.

Yeah, my summer sessions are only 8 weeks. I would do both. I did A&P II with micro and it was honestly no big deal.

You did make a GREAT point of being able to apply while I'm finishing up prereqs. Some of the community colleges around here have that option. My goal is to ace my classes so that I get accepted in the nearby ABSN.

Its a tough decision. I am going to trust my gut. Something is telling me to slow down. :(

I don't want to...but it might be the wisest move. Thanks so much for your kind words!
