Rules for Rounding

Im getting ready for my Math Final tomorrow. Can anyone tell me what the rules are as to when to round and when not to. Just when I thought I knew my teacher changes it. Thanks!

I know that. Sorry I meant to ask when to round to the nearest tenth or hundreth or whole number. I know gtt are to the whole number as is insulin. But just wanted to know if there was a concrete rule out there.

Oh I see, well our teacher told us you should always round gtts to whole drops (up or down based on the 5 rule). Most med problems come out to the nearest 10th that I've done unless I'm getting the wrong answer!lol

We were just told:

If >1 round to the hundreths

If

gtts get rounded up to a whole drop/min (of course they failed to mention if the >5

I think that what you may be referring to is how to determine what the significant digits are that you need to round to when you are doing calculations. There are set rules for doing this and I remember being given them in either my pre-algebra or Algebra I class. It has to do with the numbers that go into the calculations to begin with and how many decimal places they have. I've been trying to find some websites with these rules for you:

Thank you Daytonite, I am not very good at explaining things sometimes! I'm so glad you are!;)

I was always taught that if it is 5 or above round up, and below 5 round down. Seems pretty simple. Good luck on your final.

I wanted to Thank everyone! I took my Final today and I passed! We had to make a 90 or higher to pass. We lost 6 people today which I hate! Im very thankful to have this board to help me clarify things before a big test like that one! You are wonderful!! Hope everyone has a great holiday!

congratulations!!!!:balloons::balloons::balloons:

my method:

gtt and insulin are whole (duh)

tablets are either whole or half values (ie 2 tablets or 3.5 tablets, never 3.4 tabs, 0.7 tabs, etc)

adults - round to 10th

peds - round to 100th

chemo - round to 100th

*unless directions say otherwise*
